Tonight the Bronx is coming together for Javits Frimpong,
the 15 year old shot and killed on his way
to school last week in the Claremont section. Clergy,
classmates and neighbors are gathering to pray and remember him.
Fox 5 says Kendall Green is there with them all. Kendall.
Hey, good evening Natasha.
This vigil is just getting started as we speak,
but what a turnout this is.
I'm just going to give you a look at what we're looking at right here.
The mother of Javon Frimpong shared that she sent her son
from Ghana to the U.S. for a shot at a better life, but instead,
She's here on American soil to say goodbye.
Now, tonight, the teen's mom could have more support
than I'm sure she imagined here at the candlelight vigil.
It's the second vigil this week held in her son's honor.
Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs shared this video
of Frimpong's mother leaving Ghana,
where she shared she's taking this long trip to the city for justice.
Take a listen.
Justice for my son, that's all.
Now, today marks one week of unanswered questions
of the murder of the 15-year-old.
Police share that they're still on the search
for three suspects believed to be connected.
Now, while bullying is believed to be a contributing factor,
the city's Department of Education is cooperating
with the NYPD investigators seeking a motive.
Now, the 10th grader at Dream Yard Prep
was shot right here in Cortona Park.
The cameras captured three masked individuals
running away from the scene seconds later,
and Frimpong was taken to the hospital where doctors lost
their fight to save his life.
Now, since his death, there have been walkouts.
Demonstrations and outcries
on social media denouncing bullying, but tonight's prayer
vigil aims to add faith to that fight.
We spoke to Minister Alejandro Zayas,
who led his fifth prayer vigil this week, targeting
deadly violence across the city,
and he tells Fox 5 he offered Frimpong's mother and family
an open invitation to tonight's vigil.
The community, the city, the nation is actually crying with her.
We are also hurt.
This is our second vigil here, actually.
And honestly, it's been hard to see how
the community is suffering and hurting about this.
I think that New York City has to do better for our youth.
Now, the outcry here tonight is for justice,
and it will be a fair answer if the individuals responsible
for claiming Frimpong's life were to turn themselves in.
We're live in Bronx tonight.
Kendall Green, Fox 5 News.
