Let's bring in Tom Fitzgerald now, and Tom,
as you know, the president's party typically
doesn't do well midterms historically,
but the president's final message to the voters
was yesterday at the reflecting pool.
Did he help or hurt?
Well, I mean, the president acknowledged
that himself during his speech down at the reflecting
pool last night.
He said, which is a fact,
both Democratic and Republican presidents over the years have
lost seats as they go into these midterm elections,
but possibly not like this, all right?
You know, you go back historically.
1958, the Republican Party,
under the end of Eisenhower's term of president, they lost
50 seats in the House that year, okay?
The next worst year?
1974, Gerald Ford had just become
the Republican president after Watergate.
They lose 48 seats in that race.
Republicans do not get control of the House
of Representatives until 1994 when they sweep in with Newt Gingrich.
So they could be looking at a 1958-1974 scenario tonight, and that
could generationally put control of the House out of reach for years.
So that's what's on the line.
For Republicans tonight, when you just look
at what's going on in Virginia right now,
you've got five Republicans trying to hold on to the Republican seats.
One already, we know Morgan Griffin has won resoundingly tonight.
The other four are in tight races
and in tight races in places we traditionally haven't seen
that president goes out yesterday.
It was supposed to be his closing argument about the election.
Most of that speech I was there.
Wasn't about the midterm elections,
it was about the reflecting pool, it was about statues,
it was about beautifying Washington, D.C.
All important issues, but not really getting
to the heart of the matter about what the
midterm elections were, what was on the line,
and most importantly, Marina and Kenneth,
what voters are saying they want addressed right now.
Grocery prices, gas prices, the cost of living.
You've got...
For all intents and purposes,
an election sign on every single gas station in D.C.,
Maryland, and Virginia right now,
those are people's eyes are every day, and it was kind
of glossed over in this.
The president spoke about ending the war
and prices coming down very quickly, but the
heart of the matter, how they're going to do that,
that's been out of reach for a lot
of Republican candidates to be able to point
to a way the Republicans are going to fix
the economic situation where we're at now.
