Are available for you to take home.
Gosh, hard to believe Thanksgiving is going to be here.
Before you know it, we've got to start thinking about that.
It's just a couple weeks away.
You know, that's my favorite.
I love to eat.
I personally hope it's not 75 degrees on Thanksgiving.
I like it a little cooler than that.
But it will be close to 75 both today and tomorrow.
And Thursday, all three days.
Maybe some showers by the end of the week.
Yeah, if we do get it for Thanksgiving,
you can walk off some of that turkey.
Yeah, I'm not mad about that.
Thanks for joining us, guys.
Marissa, over to you.
Yes, it's beautiful weather, too.
And also, we have more fun continuing.
I have Pudding Vocals here.
Hey, guys.
Oh, hey!
They're going to perform for us.
We're going to get into some trending topics
and have loads of fun.
You ladies ready?
Yes, we are.
We're going to do it.
Hang lock here to the Marissa Mitchell Show.
Welcome to the Marissa Mitchell Show,
and thank you for choosing us here at 11.
We know it is a busy time in news and politics,
but for this hour, we've cooked up some recipes,
art, conversations, and entertainment,
giving you an extra boost to power through.
But for now, let's get up, be our guest, be our guest.
Well, they decided to be my guest today.
Voices like that, smooth like pudding.
And the name matches.
Local trio, Pudding Vocals.
They're performing live in studio,
and they're going to teach us how to blend our voices.
That's an added bonus for all you aspiring singers out there.
Or if you're like me, a karaoke singer,
we can learn as well.
In trending, Kirk Franklin makes music for the soul.
We know that, but he says no to soul food.
You won't believe how long he's gone
without some down-home cooking and wine.
Speaking of food, you are looking
at my crockpot turkey and veggie dish.
It's easy, perfect for fall.
I'm going to share the deets on that later.
In the meantime, though, M-Squad, I want to know your thoughts.
Scan the QR code to share your favorite crockpot recipes
or comfort food dishes in general.
We're going to read those messages in less than 30 minutes.
Then in a very special motivation with Marissa,
we're going to do it with an artistic vibe
through portraits, fresh glass, and mixed media.
A local artist will show us how we can all create beautiful pieces
from broken pieces.
From Destiny's Child to the Spice Girls,
girl groups have dominated the charts.
You can hear them now.
And get this, you do not have to wait
for the next big tour to hear some vocal powerhouses
because a trio of ladies always brings
the harmonies right here in the DMV.
I've had the pleasure to hear them live myself here now
to get those standout vocals live.
I have my ladies with me, putting vocals live in studio.
Thank you so much for coming.
I know you all can sing.
I didn't know you were doubling as models, too.
You look fantastic.
What?
Richard must have been off the chain.
If this is your show, we have to look our best, okay?
Thank you.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
So we have Deidre Love, Tashira Robertson here,
and Florence Carey, call you Flo, here today.
How do you all even come together singing?
Well, we've been singing in the DMV.
We have our own individual journeys.
And so we used to sing together on different occasions.
And then we had a Christmas event.
They wanted us to be Christmas elves.
And we sang together.
And we were like, you know what?
This is a special connection.
Let's make it a group.
Let's make it happen.
So we did.
It was about three or four years ago.
Wow.
I was at Stevie Mackey's show.
I want to say that was about a month ago now in D.C.
And he can sing.
I mean, he can sing it down.
But I could also hear the background vocalists.
And you ladies, you were doing all of that.
Who are some of the big artists you've worked with in the past?
Just name drop a little bit.
I have Russell Taylor.
Wow.
Wayna.
Bilal.
Bilal.
Oh, that's big.
They don't choose anybody to do that.
And you all are going to hit our stage here in just about 25 minutes.
I'm looking forward to that.
My producer also told me you're going to walk me through,
I guess, how to sing or how to blend vocals, too.
Is that true?
We can all learn this?
I thought it was a special gift.
Hold on.
With some practice.
Thank you.
Basics, right?
You've got to start somewhere, but it is possible.
You already do some trending topics to talk about.
About the blowing up the headlines.
First up, gospel icon Kirk Franklin with a revelation.
See that double there on Tondra about his diet.
The 56-year-old opening up to Kandi Burris on her podcast,
sharing he has not had soul food in decades.
Yeah, I haven't had fried food and soul food.
I haven't had soul food, fried food or soul food in about 25 years.
Okay, now, that's tough.
Now, I have like months, like every year that I,
you know, cut all that stuff out.
But to say for years not to have
a lemon pepper chicken wing, I don't know.
I don't know if I can do it.
And the head of them.
I don't think I've ever had a lemon pepper chicken wing.
Oh, the blasphemy of it all.
That's discipline if I ever heard it.
The entertainer says he's eating habits
as part of a broader discipline
and training for better health
and redefining what turning 50 and aging
looks like to him.
I did not see that coming.
No, no.
I mean, it makes sense.
Did you all go that long?
I mean, are you into soul food,
lemon pepper wings, all the things?
Lemon pepper is definitely on the menu.
You said lemon pepper?
Yes.
I got to use that one.
Yes, that's my best friend.
My mama makes it especially, you know,
when I have to.
All right.
I will say, though, one thing I've changed
within the last couple of years
is kind of pulling back on the extra salty food.
I can still have the foods, but kind of manage it
because you don't want to throw everything out of whack.
And I understand, Kirk.
Like, I train at the gym too.
However, I'm going to have a cheat day
and I'm going to have some macaroni and cheese.
Come on.
Go on, somebody.
Collard greens, too.
And cornbread.
And Thanksgiving is coming.
Quickly.
Actress Meagan Good says the controversy
surrounding her relationship with actor.
and now husband, Jonathan Majors, actually brought them
closer together in an interview with IRL with Angie Martinez.
Good said the couple made a conscious decision
to block out all public criticism and support each other following
his 2023 arrest conviction for that case involving his ex-girlfriend.
She also says that he helped her to deal
with some personal difficulties that she has not publicly shared.
The couple, you may recall, they married back in March of last year.
What do you make of them?
Deciding what to focus on before I even got too deep.
That's the best way to be here.
You two together, don't bring anybody in,
especially the outside noise and being
that you're in the public eye.
So I think that was genius.
And it looked genuine.
The way they look at each other, you can't really fake that.
And I think they both have gone through things publicly.
With Meagan, this is her second time around
after a very highly publicized divorce.
And so it's good that they're in it to win it.
They seem to get each other.
Yeah.
That's not my business.
That's right.
Social media can be such a cruel place for anyone,
so you have to block that out and not even put your phone down,
don't look at it.
If so, you'll be consumed all day.
All the time.
It'll take over if you're not careful.
Ariana Grande, she blew up social media,
giving fans a rare glimpse of her boyfriend, Ricky Alvarez.
I saw this across my feed.
I was like, wait, what?
And an Instagram carousel Monday,
the singer shared two photos of her cozying up to her boo.
They first dated after meeting on Grande.
It's 2015 tour.
Y'all are cackling over there.
They split a year later, but after months of speculation,
they appear to have rekindled
the flames.
And being back together,
she reportedly considers him dependable and supportive.
But what everybody's talking about out
of this is spinning the block, going back to
an ex.
Would you have you?
on a block or two.
No.
No,
no,
no circumstance
would be worth it.
All my exes are blocked.
Really?
Like blocked from your phones?
Completely blocked.
Social media,
no.
No, thank you.
But in their case,
you know,
wonderful if it works
for you, cool.
If it works for you,
boo, do you.
We don't know what happened,
so, I mean,
it may have been.
Distance, I don't, we don't know.
It may have been something that they could work on.
I think there are some, I guess, non-negotiables
if we want to keep it easy, where you're like,
I'm not going back. It was good while it lasted.
Maybe it wasn't good while it lasted.
But you don't want to revisit, but it's working for her.
At least for now.
What's the world to know? So congrats.
All the best.
Finally, a relationship expert dishes on what you should do
when your ex spins the block.
And now we're not talking about spinning the block
if that ex comes back.
They say first.
Pause and think about re-engaging.
You're all laughing at this one, too.
Therapists say the desire to reconnect usually stems
from temporary loneliness.
I think that's a whole word, temporary loneliness.
If you're not ready to block them,
she says, I've already blocked all of mine.
Try muting them on your socials.
Refocus your energy back to yourself.
I want to talk about just breakups in general.
Did you find yourself in the past having to...
End it all to move forward
or is it was it easier to kind of get over once it was over easier
But also I'm just remembering why so that's another thing
to kind of keep you away from going back to old things
It's just like um, you know why so why would you go back to that?
And I think a lot of times as women we
are already grieving towards the end of a relationship
So when you know, it's that clean break then
You know it's done and that you're not going back.
I agree.
I think by the time the public knows a lot of this stuff,
it's already been over and done.
You're a month ahead before everyone gets to know.
And if you want to get back with that person,
maybe you need to put on putting vocals
because they'll sing you to some good memories at least.
Or some comedy.
There you go.
But they're going to hang around first, though, for our hot sheet.
I'm going to put you in the know as you start your holiday shopping.
Have you all started yet?
I already put up my Christmas tree, y'all.
I'm ready to go.
Oh, it's time.
Just waiting until you hear it.
We're going to hear how men and women are different
when it comes to gift giving.
Also in today's Meals Made Easy,
we're going to give the gift of recipes.
They're setting up.
They're going to make for us a fall harvest salad.
So that's going to be nice to get that in the mix.
And do not forget, scan the QR code, producer V, there it is,
to send us your favorite comfort foods that you like to make.
Or maybe you just show up and eat.
And they're your favorites.
We're going to read your messages in just a bit.
Welcome back to today's Hot Sheet.
I have put in vocals in the house.
We got Chloe, Deidra, Tashira having so much fun
that we invited media personality, our girl, Alice.
I just met my sisters in Christ.
Yes.
Hey.
You all jealous?
We did not plan it this way.
I love this.
Y'all ready for the hot sheet?
We ready.
But here's how it goes.
If you like the story or agree with it, you give it a hot.
That's a flame.
If not, not. Okay.
Okay.
All right.
As we head towards the season of giving,
a new survey reports the different ways men
and women give back.
A new YouGov profile study found that women
were more likely to buy gifts for their friends than men
It was only an exception if that man is a spouse
or in a serious relationship. Then they give.
More than half of women bought their girlfriends
a present compared to just 36% of men.
Also, it didn't matter the occasion.
More women offered gifts during weddings, graduations, other functions.
This study, do we agree?
Do we get it?
Hot or not?
Why is it built that way?
It's just, you know, as women, that's just the girl thing to do.
It's just the way to be.
It's just, yeah.
We're nurturing.
We're nurturing.
We think about, we're so organized.
Considerate.
Uh-huh.
Did a guy ever surprise you at how much he gave
to you in terms of gifts, maybe in the past?
Yeah.
My current, my current.
Oh, your current boo?
Yeah, yeah.
Well, what was the last?
I'm not going to give, no, I'm not going to do that.
You got to keep it quiet on the cream.
Super quiet.
But, yes, there were some things I was thoroughly surprised at.
I got everything checked off of my list.
Oh, I would say, too, my now,
and it's still, I got to get used to this.
Yes.
Dean, but he's a big gift giver, too, a lot like my father was,
and that was one of the things that attracted him.
Among others, but he's very giving.
Thank you very much.
Any other givers out there that you've seen from the men?
Jack Harlow dropping a new
seven-track project this week. It's called
Sweet Action 2. The project
features R&B legend Babyface.
This threw me for a loop. I wouldn't have put
those two together, but there's a track that's called
Too Soon. We're going to play a snippet
and then talk about it.
Is it too soon?
Too soon for me to love somebody new.
All right, that was a snippet.
Fans can hear the full track
when the project drops this Friday.
As musicians here,
what do you all think of this collaboration?
I like that. It's Babyface.
Anything he puts his hand in, you know,
it's kind of gold.
It turns to gold.
Speaking of which, Babyface will be in town
this Sunday at Maryland Live.
So he will be here. I just thought about that.
All right. I never keep the secrets, but no.
No, I mean...
But Giancarlo, he knows how to do it right.
He is trying to find another hit.
He hasn't had one in a while.
So he was like, let me go to the other side
where I know I'm going to get a hit.
And Babyface is going to give you a hit.
He said, this is for the cool in you.
This is for the cool in you.
He did it for John B.
He did it for John B.
He did.
I have not heard a Babyface song that I didn't like.
Do you hear me?
I mean, all decades of Babyface.
80s, 90s, 2000s.
He doesn't.
Is there an artist you would like to work with one day
on a Babyface level or other?
Fantasia.
We love Fantasia.
Fantasia.
Fantasia's good if you're watching.
When I see you.
Crack a gospel song on.
It comes on and everybody breaks out.
Love it.
How about you?
I like Simone.
Simone.
She's good.
That's a good artist.
Well, I don't have no me, me, me, me, me.
I don't have any.
Victoria Monet.
Victoria Monét.
Victoria Monet.
Victoria Monét.
Victoria Monét.
She's a great dancer, all-around entertainer.
Victoria Monet.
Victoria Monét.
Victoria Monet.
But definitely will be Simone.
Victoria Monet.
We love Simone.
Victoria Monet.
Okay.
Victoria Monet.
Well, I have this affirmation.
Victoria Monet.
Victoria Monet.
I saw this online, and I talked to our producer, Victoria.
I said,
we've got to put this in the show because I think it's a good talk.
Our friends over at the Jasmine Brand, they posted this this morning.
It said, there is peace in knowing
that you will never miss out on what's truly meant for you.
I could run around the studio right now.
That's what I'm saying.
Hot or not, hot or not, hot or not.
So this is what we're going to do.
We're going to start with you, Alex, and work it down this way.
How does that resonate, and how has it shown up in your own life?
Ooh, let me be quick, because I'm going to end up giving a sermon.
But today, I was just riding in the car,
and I just know that your testimony comes
when you're going through so much, and what is meant for you.
God is going to receive the glory.
So once you know that you are in it,
and you're going through something,
know that there's glory on the other side.
So what is meant for you is definitely going to come to pass,
because you are a living witness right here to my right.
Oh, thank you.
I think that's true for a professional and your personal life, right?
Would you agree?
Yes.
Especially in seasons of transition where you're
not really sure what you're supposed to do.
That's good.
It can be hard to keep faith.
But as you keep moving and you realize all
these things had to happen to get to the point I am.
And so I just really appreciate my sisters.
We've been there for each other through so many things.
And we have seen just the opportunities we've given just
by believing in each other and believing in ourselves.
And not giving up.
I mean, that's what it's about, getting to the other side
of whatever it is you're enduring.
And I definitely will say, too, like you said,
what's meant for you.
what's meant for you, sometimes you feel like
the opportunity has passed, and like my sister
said, by all means, sometimes you have
to go through certain things, so once you get
there, you're fully prepared.
So yeah, I do believe that.
I want to pull you in as well, Tashira,
but first I want to say this because you made
me think of something.
We have to stop being such in a rush of praying
or wishing away tough times.
Granted, you don't want to go in a rush,
but it prepares you for what's next, and then
once you get to the other side of it,
you can look back and go, hey, I got over that
I can take this off and come out better.
You felt that?
Yeah, I've been through a lot of stuff this year.
And just being around these ladies, it's shown me time and time again,
I've seen it, that things always work out for the better.
So just pushing through that and just believing and trusting,
just showing from what we've done so far,
like it's been a blessing and we just, we're going to keep going.
Keep going.
And finally, I'll just add this,
that I think when you understand truly what's for you is for you,
you won't be jealous of us, right?
You will not.
Because you don't know.
You can look at what appears like a win,
but you don't know how many losses it took
to get to that side of things.
You have to be very careful.
Yes.
you don't know the cost.
Yeah, don't covet other people's things.
Please don't.
Don't be jealous.
Don't be envious.
Your season, you don't know.
Your season is coming.
You don't know.
And sometimes that season came before you
because God wants you to see a glimpse of
who you may be or what you're going to become.
Yes.
Let's bring out time.
No.
I'm getting very nervous right now.
It's okay.
It's okay.
It's okay.
It's okay.
Surrounded by beautiful women, I don't know what to say.
It's okay.
It's okay.
It's okay.
It's a blessing.
It's okay.
Your blessing is a blessing.
It's okay.
It's okay.
Every day on your show is a blessing.
It's okay.
Aw, Tucker Sealy, you're so sweet.
It's okay.
It's okay.
All right, beautiful afternoon, beautiful day,
It's okay.
It's okay.
a little bit 70s, perfect voting weather.
More of the same tomorrow.
We will have a few showers by Thursday and Friday,
but, you know, one day at a time.
That's a ballot box that's recited.
We're doing the work.
It's over the show.
I got all kinds of...
Thank you, Tucker.
Make sure you stay for the benediction.
Yes.
Well, the forecast, you just said it.
It's perfect for fall.
Perfect for fall comfort food.
So our Meals Made Easy guests have you covered with some cozy
and creative recipes.
Chef Tia's already hard at work on a fall harvest salad recipe.
Ooh, I cannot wait.
Also, I want to know your favorite fall recipes.
Just scan the QR code to share.
We're going to dish on those after this quick break.
And, squad,
this block
is about you.
I got Alex hanging by.
I asked earlier, Alex, I was like,
I need to know your favorite comfort foods.
And you all have been sounding off just a stream
of messages coming in with you sharing your thoughts.
Denise is saying, I love, see all the O's and V's in there?
A good butternut.
Squash soup and grilled cheese sandwich.
That sounds fantastic.
That is amazing.
I love me a sandwich.
I could eat a sandwich all day.
And some soup, anything that has broth or, yeah.
You know what?
I would dip the salad in the soup.
You know.
Or the sandwich.
You know what I meant.
And then we got Taisha here talking about her crock pot recipe.
She says, my favorite crock pot recipe is to cook
a roast with potatoes, celery, carrots,
onions, and all the fresh herbs and spices coming in from D.C.
I love that.
You can taste it already.
The reason why I came up with this
This is because I just did a Crock-Pot recipe,
which I'll show in a bit.
First, though, Barb, I want a comfort cocktail.
Okay, drinky drink.
Y'all can keep the soup.
I'm fine sipping bourbon that winter.
Call it my liquid diet, okay?
That is okay, long as you do it in moderation.
Yeah, no calories there.
I love that.
Let's see if we can pull up some video here for me.
When I do the Crock-Pot,
it's not just, Alex, about fall-flavored stuff.
It's easy.
It's easy.
You take all of the recipes
You throw it in the pot.
That went for five hours, and I was eating dinner.
You talk about being a wife already.
He who finds a wife finds a good thing.
She already know how to cook.
But you know what?
I've had the crock pot.
I've been cooking since college.
Yeah, my mom raised me up on that.
So this is the turkey.
We got onions, mushrooms, bell pepper,
sweet peppers, garlic, all over rice.
And then I also used chicken broth and cream of chicken for this.
You're making me hungry, girl.
It was steaming up the camera, so you know.
You know it was going to be, yes.
You know what, next time I'll make you a plate when you're here.
Please do.
Tell us about this event, though, that you have coming up.
Oh, my God.
So, we want to get our girls ready for the holiday season
and for Thanksgiving season.
So, you know, I have a wellness and social club called That Girl Club.
And so, we're going to do a social.
Our social event is going to be at Realm DC on November 17th.
Okay.
It will be hosted by an influencer, a business influencer,
that's going to give you some strategic business tools.
Her name is Melonzo, so she'll be here.
And then Saturday, come
for the wellness workshop with Pilates Bay Shay.
And she's going to do one-hour floor mat Pilates with us.
So, yes, that is the Wellness Week coming up right before the holidays.
So we're going to get you right before.
And what's the name of it again?
That Girl Club.
That Girl Club.
I love that.
And we're a wellness and social community.
Okay, well, it's before Thanksgiving, too,
so you can get that in before the holiday rush and all of that.
Thank you so much for coming.
Oh, my God, Marissa, thank you for having me.
Great job on this event.
Thank you.
And take pictures so we can talk about it next time.
I will.
I definitely will.
And congratulations to our girl.
Thank you.
Thank you, that girl.
Oh, I appreciate you so much.
Well, let's get to some more girls outstanding.
Standing Girls, the Put In Vocals Trio,
they're coming up next with a very special performance,
their twist on a Stevie Wonder classic.
Yes, they're also going to teach us how to blend our own vocals next.
For today's edition of On The Mic,
we are back with local trio Put In Vocals with their take
on Stevie Wonder's classic, Love's In Need Of Love, today.
Here's your friendly announcer.
I have serious news to share
with everybody, what I'm about to say,
could mean the world's
disaster,
bring your joy and
laughter to tears,
you know today,
send your zen
writer, know
I know that hate
Before
we've gone
too far,
cautionary
measure,
if love
and peace
you trust,
then hear
us say.
Entirely to sing Stevie Wonder.
Thank you very much.
I'm wondering how you all,
not just R&B and soul, but you do
Gospel, you do classical, pop, you do it all.
You do it all.
So how did you choose that song for today specifically?
Well, I think we all really need love today.
Oh, yes.
There's so many things going on in the world,
and it needs to be a reminder that love can still exist.
And to be mindful just to remember to love each other.
And you all have solos.
I picked up on that.
But then I'm...
I'm trying to figure out, because you harmonize.
I'm like, I think they can all do soprano.
They can probably all do alto.
Really, you can do it all.
So how did you all decide where you wanted to land musically?
I think a big part of us being friends is being able to tell
who fits this part better in certain songs.
So we just switch it up every once in a while.
So what happens if you get to that big note, right?
And you're like, you know what?
I don't think I'm going to hit it,
so I'm going to bring it down an octave.
You all can adjust on the spot.
We support and we trust each other.
So one day, someone's like,
I know I'm supposed to sing this part,
but I don't have it, we'll jump in.
We're a West Side shop, like,
Flo can sing as low as baritone too,
we can sing as high as first soprano,
so in between that, we're gonna get it done.
You all can do all of that,
because you're gonna show us how to harmonize
on a basic level, this is beginner level harmony.
Okay, so teach.
Because I want to learn.
Okay, so you want to do harmony?
Yeah, something easy that me and the viewers can do.
You all are the pros, but say there's somebody out there
who's always wanted to sing
or they want to join in the Christmas caroling that's coming up.
What are some things or even warm-ups we can
do vocally to prepare ourselves?
Let's start there.
So I would say, one, listen.
Okay, listen.
I think a lot of times we just want
to be a little bit all over the place.
Runs are wonderful, but we want to make sure that tone is there.
For instance, if we're singing ABCs,
you start the key that you want to start in.
I'm scared.
Don't be scared.
A, B, C.
A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H.
Okay, see, I needed to start lower.
If we're going to go up high.
You want to sing with what I'm singing.
Okay.
And they're going to join in.
Okay, so we start together?
Mm-hmm.
A, B, C, D, E.
G-H-I-J-K-L-M-N-O-P-Q-T-U-V-W-Y-NOW-NO-NEXT-TIME-SING-ME
You did it!
And what we try to do as background vocalists,
we choose to listen.
We know that we all can't be loud.
We have to listen to each other's sound,
adjust to the volume, adjust to each other's tone.
Because we heard you did a nice even tone,
so we said we're gonna match your color,
match what you do.
So it really takes stepping outside of yourself,
being humble.
And listening to everybody else.
It's the same with interviewing.
I tell people all the time the best
interviewers are the best listeners.
You've got to listen.
So where can people go and listen and hear you?
What's on tap?
Well, you can follow us at Pudding Vocals on Instagram
and Pudding.Vocals on TikTok.
Amazing.
Congratulations.
You changed the whole atmosphere of the room.
Look, I can sing now.
Can I go on tour?
Yes, you can.
Come on, right with us.
Thank you, ladies.
It's 1137.
Coming up next,
this very special
Motivation with Marissa
aimed at bringing you
some peace.
Meet the local artists
behind a profound exhibit
with a message
that you can make peace
from broken pieces.
That's a good one.
Plus, our eyes
are on eating first
because how great
do these dishes look?
We're going to show them.
They're so great,
you can't see them yet.
Yeah.
Fall recipes,
including a harvest salad
in less than 10 minutes.
It's just like a stir fry.
Well, you know, I always want to help you find your inner peace.
So in today's Motivation with Marissa, it is emphasizing that.
We're going to talk all about the incredibly healing power of art,
plus how you can actually find peace in broken pieces.
It's possible.
A D.C.-based artist is also organizing an upcoming event
that will feature some mindful movement next Saturday,
November 14th, in Silver Spring.
Artist Simone Agusier is here now to tell us more.
Thank you for coming.
Thank you for having me.
Let's begin with the title,
Peace from Broken Pieces.
Yes, so I was here before
and when you were looking at my art, my signature style
is broken glass.
And I remember you mentioning that your mentor brought
to mind when he said finding peace
in broken pieces.
So then when the opportunity came up to have
a solo exhibition at Peace and Movement in
And then in Silver Springs, I was like...
The perfect name would be Peace and Broken Pieces from you.
So thank you so much for the inspiration.
Oh, you're welcome.
It just came out.
I was just talking like I always do.
I was like, this is Peace and Broken Pieces quite literally.
And that's what you're creating.
And you do this through mixed media and glass.
Tell me about this, the sitting here.
So this is one of the feature pieces that's
on the exhibition right now in Peace and Movement.
And this is Broken Mirror Pieces.
And I wanted to include the viewer to be a part of the artwork.
So when you're actually viewing this piece, the self.
The viewer becomes the subject of the art piece
and they're seeing themselves in broken pieces.
But there's a question to ask,
can something that is broken still be whole?
And during the whole exhibition, you walk through it
and you kind of find that answer through the exhibition.
And through yourself, that's the question that you can ask.
Yes.
Wow, what's that over here right behind you here?
This is beautiful.
Thank you.
So this is one of the future artworks for the exhibition.
This is Weight of the World.
And it's about a strong woman carrying literally
the weight of the world on her head,
but doing it flawlessly, beautifully, and with power.
What do you make of the earth, you know,
being in color and everything else
in black and white? What's the significance of that?
Just the weight of the world.
This actually piece came from a commission
with a doctor who was kind of focusing
on, like, maternity health
for women, and so we kind of talked
about this, and the world is actually created
in broken glass as well, so I just
wanted that to be the point. I see it now!
So this is a print of the actual original that's
at the exhibition. Of the original. Okay, I see
Marilyn Monroe, one of the most
iconic women of all time.
And the back here, what is that made of?
That's also the finely crushed glass.
So a lot of my work has the bigger glass.
I don't have any today.
All of this is like the crushed glass.
But that's kind of like the particles
and the residue that comes off of from breaking the bigger glass.
So it's kind of like the dust.
And then I collect it and create more beautiful art.
So Marilyn Monroe.
Okay, what are you wearing on your hands?
I'm
We got to protect you at all costs.
starting
Yes, no, absolutely, absolutely.
What does that look like when you're actually putting it together?
So I've been doing it for about...
Six years now, but I definitely wear gloves,
banging up glass in the parking lot and stuff like that,
to
or late at night so I don't disturb everybody.
speak
And it looks like I have to be very careful
because I'm always cutting myself, so...
Exhibit A, I have some viewers.
What did you do?
That's what I'm saying.
now.
I can. I can did that earlier.
Now, this one's covered.
Yes, this one's covered. I can uncover it.
So this is a work in progress, actually.
Yeah, come on over.
So I'm definitely excited about this.
I think...
For me, the journey of finding peace and broken pieces
definitely came about from a lot of different things,
whether it's, like, mental issues or failed relationships
or failed anything, or just, like, life not turning out
how you want it to be.
But then you find peace.
So this is based off of love, and it's a work in progress,
so it's now we're complete.
But I just wanted to show y'all the start of something.
I'm getting all giddy right now to see what's behind this cloth.
Oh!
I did not expect that.
Oh, my God.
What the?
When I saw it, I was like, what is this?
Yes, no.
Yes.
I'm looking forward to finishing it
with the signature broken glass piece, especially for you.
So congratulations on your love.
Wow, thank you.
That is very, very thoughtful,
and it certainly symbolizes peace from broken pieces.
Yes, yes, yes.
Years worth.
I love this.
Thank you so much.
You even got us curly hair.
Yes, this is just the first layer,
so still a lot of work to do with it.
Thank you.
And so November 14th, next Saturday, where is this event,
and how can people get more information?
So it's in Silver Spring, Maryland at Peace and Movement.
which is owned by Jasmine Williams
and it will be at four o'clock and it's Mindful Movement and
trying to decide what can you say no to today
so you can say yes to something else
whether it's like you know self-love,
self-respect, self-health, all those things.
It sounds exciting.
Totally immersive, just like your fire said.
Yeah, that's going to be fun.
Well, Simone, thank you so much for sharing and forgiving.
I love this.
Really, my heart almost jumped out of my chest when I saw it.
It really is beautiful.
Thank you.
Oh, my goodness.
Well, now I think I've worked up an appetite.
After all of that, I'm going to head over to the kitchen
to enjoy this Meals Made Easy segment
with a good friend of ours here at Fox 5.
It's been years now, Chef Tia, that you've been around.
Aqueesha here, hey lady,
to talk about your company and how have things been so far?
It's been great, thank you.
Yeah, so tell our viewers more because they're going
to want to know where to find you, if
you cater, all of that stuff.
Definitely.
So I'm Chef Tia with Esculent 11 Catering.
I do catering all over Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.
I do everything from private dinners to birthday parties
and weddings as well.
And so today I'm going to be featuring some of my...
My fall favorites.
Ooh, looks good.
Everything's my favorite up here.
Thank you.
My favorite, actually.
Let's start with what we're looking at right here.
Is this like a soup?
Yeah, so right here we have a Tuscan white bean and sausage soup,
and that also has a cream base inside for people
who are lactose intolerant.
Over here we have my sweet potato cornbread
with a little bit of powdered sugar and honey to top it off.
And over here, I like to call it the kitchen sink fall winter salad.
We have honey goat cheese with honey crisp apples,
cranberries, red onions, and also kale salad.
You put everything in it but the kitchen sink.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
What's your favorite to make out of these three?
Probably the soup.
The soup.
That's not your average soup, though.
What are some tips you would give to viewers
who try to, I guess, replicate some of this, at least at home?
Don't be scared of depth and the flavors that it brings.
Make sure that you are aware of what your palate...
It's going to be surprised by because it's really good.
And you want to taste as you go, too,
because sometimes we can get happy with the seasoning
and then next thing you know, it's too sweet or too salty.
Yeah.
This sweet potato cornbread.
I've never had that before.
I've had cornbread, but not sweet potato cornbread.
Yeah.
So what you want to do is once you make
your traditional cornbread, you want to roast
off a sweet potato until it gets nice and sweet.
And then you will just add that into your mix and bake it off.
I feel like Thanksgiving.
What are these?
Geez, looks like headliners here on the end.
So over here, I'm actually going to require some of your help.
Okay, I'm ready.
So this right here is a tomahawk pork chop,
just like you would have the tomahawk steak.
But this is actually a tomahawk pork chop.
And it's a little bit smaller than the actual tomahawk steak.
And that has my maple.
Thank
Mustard, honey mustard glaze on top.
And so this is just a simple dish that you can make at home for you
and your fella or your fiancé now that you guys can make at home.
You would simply roast a pork chop all up.
And then we're going to be stuffing some mini roasted pumpkins.
you.
I know you guys see a lot of mini pumpkins in the store.
Go ahead and grab a few.
Take the top off and roast it in the oven.
And you can just create a nice look with stuffing the roasted pumpkins
and adding it to your plate.
So that's what we're going to do today.
Got it.
Okay, I'm ready to get my hands dirty.
Okay.
I want to ask you, though, about the...
The pork here is probably easier to make than a tomahawk steak,
because I cannot do a good steak to save my life.
I can't keep it tender enough.
So how do we keep this tender with the pork?
So it all depends on the temperature that you like,
which you want to cook your pork to.
Some people are a little nervous because it's pork,
so they like their pork to be well done.
At 165, you can go down to 145 on pork.
So it all depends on your temperature that you're cooking.
that you would like to have it at.
Got it.
Shaquisha, you come down.
I feel like you need to be closer to us.
Okay, so let's get into it.
You tell me what to do.
I don't want to mess it up.
Okay, so this is my quinoa brown rice with cranberries inside.
We're going to just simply take that and stuff the pumpkin with it.
Okay.
Now, if you don't have quinoa, whatever,
What are some other substitutes you can do?
Um, you can use any type of rice that you like.
I like quinoa for the fiber and everything.
But you can use any type.
You can even use mashed potatoes if you like
to stuff it with mashed potatoes as well.
Now, Chef Tia, you're going over the whole thing.
I was just doing the whole.
Should I put more?
Yeah, you can make a little height
because you always want to have height on your plate
for presentation purposes.
Oh, that's a trick.
Yes, definitely.
And this is good for people who are hosting parties and stuff.
Yes, presentation.
Presentation is everything, because you eat with your eyes first anyway.
And so, like I stated, you can easily make these at home.
Again, they're the mini stuffed pumpkins.
They're about 99 cents in the grocery store.
And you will put that right,
right there next to your pork.
And then just to add a little culinary art to it.
That is so cute, a little flair.
And I love color, especially with fall flavors.
So here are some pomegranate seeds.
And you can actually sprinkle that on the sauce just
to add even more color to your plate.
And so these are just simple winter dishes that you can make at home.
That is perfecto.
And you would eat this with the kitchen sink salad.
Yes, yes.
I think all of this will go together.
This will be your first course, the kitchen sink salad.
Then you have the soup over here as well, and then your main entree.
So it's literally having restaurant-quality meals at home.
Love it.
I want to hear more about your relationship and working together.
How did you two come to be?
We've known each other for a while,
and she's my inspiration to be in the kitchen.
I just...
Love her ideas, and she brings so much depth to food,
and it is just an inspiration.
OK, well, what should I try first, then?
The salad or the soup?
Um, I say the sweet potato cornbread because you know, I did say,
you know, I'll try what I've never had first. So let's,
let's plate that up and then also plate up the soup in the meantime.
All right. All right. So everything looks good.
Smells good. Do you also offer catering?
Yes, I do catering. Esculent 11 catering is my, um,
website esculent11.com
so here is the sweet potato
cornbread and I'm just
going to later use some soup over here.
And we know, I guess
Thanksgiving is now about three and a half weeks
off. Is it too early to put
in the orders? No, definitely
not. You want to get your orders in
early because I do book
fast and so
Thanksgiving is, I would suggest
for people to start contacting
now for Thanksgiving orders. I can taste
why.
I can taste why you booked so fast.
What's the most elaborate, I guess,
Thanksgiving dinner or event you've ever hosted or catered?
I want to say I did a duck one year for Thanksgiving.
Yeah, they had multiple.
Of course, everyone has the turkey.
But then I had a client that also wanted to do something different.
And so they chose to do duck as well.
So I prepared an orange glazed duck for them.
Oh, man.
I mean, it's like a Super Bowl, right?
It's Thanksgiving.
How about you?
Alicia, what are some...
I love a good macaroni and cheese.
Yeah, you can't go wrong.
So you can't go wrong with that.
It's classic, and then you can add your spin to it,
add lobster, whatever you want to it.
So that's just my personal favorite.
Oh, I'm so glad.
This is so good.
You can just eat this by itself.
I don't need the soup or the salad, but I want to eat those, too.
Thank you, ladies, so much for coming.
Thank you for having us.
We'll see you next week as we get closer to the holidays.
We'll be right back.
We'll
be
We're back now for your bursts of joy, and if you can't tell
from the music, we want to highlight the joy that so many of you found
right
when I shared my holiday decorations with you yesterday.
I actually had a couple of people say, Marissa,
we can no longer be friends because you put up your tree too early.
back.
I did it as soon as Halloween wrapped.
I put up my tree Sunday.
I always do that every year.
It hasn't changed.
I took your messages on air yesterday,
and now you all are sounding off online.
Don't judge me, LOL.
Well, I had my Christmas tree up.
up since last year, and I made a wreath to match the other day.
Listen, at least you don't have to
start over from scratch, so it's kind of easy to have that already up.
A lot of you told me you
were going to wait until Thanksgiving week.
I also have this one. Yes, celebrate all year long.
I keep up the tree all year, a tree on every floor,
every holiday, honey. So she got multiple trees
in her house, and thank you so much for writing in,
both on there and off. We appreciate it.
Be right back.
A wonderful show
with all of my guests.
Thank you so much for coming.
And we're going to do it all over
again tomorrow with some other guests.
At 11 a.m. on the Marissa Mitchell Show, I had to get you a sneak peek.
At the first ever Prince George's County Fashion Week,
you're going to see some cutting-edge looks during
an in-studio fashion show,
and we're going to have executive leadership here, too.
It's going to be a show first.
Plus, how well do you know your partner?
Well, Sparks will fly when several couples play
our version of the newlywed game,
including two of our guests.
