The U.S. ballot box, how much influence do elections overseas have
on our political landscape here at home?
Although Eskin is a former Foreign Service officer and author,
joins us now to connect some of those global dots.
Good morning.
Good morning to you, and happy voting day.
Thank you very much.
How do some of these elections overseas,
how do they impact us here at home?
Well, obviously, they can change government's policies.
They can do, governments,
other countries can do things that we like or don't like.
And in free countries, that's going to be determined by elections.
These days, I think we try to determine
the elections ourselves, which...
I don't think it's a good move.
Recently in Brazil and Serbia, Romania,
we've intervened in domestic elections
to try to change their government's policies or attitudes.
We haven't been very successful on that.
We've basically backed the wrong horse.
But I think that's not a good...
There we go, we've got Romania.
A few weeks ago on the screen, it's it's a dangerous game
when we or any other country tries to intervene.
We would not tolerate it in this country
when Russia tried to do that a few years ago.
You can remember the reaction.
Thank
Bipartisan reaction,
totally objecting to Russian interference in our domestic affairs.
you
Yeah, obviously, we're talking about the U.S. involvement in some
of these elections overseas and the backing of certain candidates.
very
Yeah.
When it comes...
It comes to the opposite.
What happens here?
What's going to be determined tonight, right?
much.
Could determine the balance of power
in Congress here in the United States.
How does something like that then potentially
impact future elections overseas?
Well, it won't directly affect elections, but it will directly affect.
Other countries' policies,
we have a foreign policy which has been traditionally non-partisan.
Democrats, Republicans kind of agreed on foreign policy issues.
We're just, we're...
That's no longer quite the same now.
We've kind of split domestically on policies.
I think, for example, in...
In Brazil, I think, we tend to try to find a common ground,
a common sense agreement traditionally in this country.
I don't think most American voters care that much about foreign policy.
Yes.
Yes.
Foreign policy issues, unless it involves war,
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
don't really affect people directly.
But now it does.
So I think we...
We're going to see what happens on the votes tonight and tomorrow.
If there's a major change in the Senate and House,
I think we're going to see some changes
in attitude towards the war in Iran
and probably a change in our...
A willingness to intervene in domestic policies
of other countries to go back to traditional.
It will definitely be something to keep
an eye on how it impacts things globally,
not just here in the United States, based on what happens tonight.
Of course, we'll bring you the updates
when we start to get those results this evening.
Mr. Eskin, thanks for joining us
