So much to look out for. Same thing, same story in Northwest D.C.
And that's where we have Maureen Umeh, who's live. Good morning.
Good morning. So lots happening here.
The polling place opening at seven o'clock.
You can see all the campaign signs at a safe distance.
Fifty feet is usually what it is.
But let me show you what's happening here.
Not a lot of people showing up so far this morning,
but we will be heading inside to show you how it's going so far.
Smooth sailing. Folks are having an easy time coming
to these polling places and casting their ballots here
in D.C. You can vote at any open voting place. You don't have to vote
in the one that is in your neighborhood or that's designated to you.
You can vote anywhere, which makes it certainly easier.
A lot happening politically in D.C. with changes
that we haven't seen in many, many years.
For the first time in 12 years, voters will be electing a new mayor.
That is because Mayor Muriel Bowser, after three terms,
has decided not to run for a fourth term.
Democratic incumbent Janice Lewis-George,
she won the primary with 54 percent of the vote.
She is expected to cruise to victory this evening.
She does have some challengers, however.
She has a Green Party challenger today, which is Robert Gross.
Independent Rhonda Hamilton and a slate of write-in candidates are all.
Going after her and going after that position,
Lewis George has made defending D.C.'s limited autonomy
an essential part of her campaign.
She has said she will take on President Trump,
who has said that he doesn't mind taking over D.C.
He wants federal control.
She would succeed Mayor Bowser again if she does win,
who did not run for a fourth term.
The other big race that we are watching today
is the race for a delegate.
That is Robert White, the Democratic candidate.
He resigned from his at-large D.C. council seat yesterday.
After there were some questions about a law that bars...
a delegate from holding another paid public office on Election Day.
So he had to resign.
He served in council for 10 years.
He says one of the things he will do as delegate is to change that law.
So we're watching to see how that happens.
Also, today, the voters are electing a D.C. attorney general.
There's a senatorial race, a bunch of council member seats,
but a lot happening here in
D.C. as voters have some tough choices to make
in terms of how they want the leadership
of D.C. to shape up, new leadership coming into the fold now,
and how it will ultimately
We'll be heading to another polling place after this to give you
a vantage point, then trying to catch up with some of the candidates
as they cast their ballots later this morning and hear from them
how they're feeling going into this morning's, today's election
and certainly as they hope for victory later on tonight.
We'll be following them and bringing you their comments.
Also voters as well, how they think things are going
and what they'd like to see happen here in D.C. For now,
that's the latest. I'm going to send it back to you guys as we go in.
And try to get some comments
from the different people I just mentioned.
And we'll bring you that in the next hour.
Back to you in the meantime.
Hi, I'm Maureen in Northwest D.C.
And, of course, our election coverage all across
the DMV continues all day long here on Fox 5.
We'll do it on Fox 5 Plus and on Fox Local.
Yes, it's a big day.
Be sure also to tune in for our special election coverage
that starts at 7 o'clock tonight and goes until 2 a.m.
