The creators visit iconic cafes, street food stalls, and high-end spots to test if the city's food scene lives up to its global reputation, ultimately concluding that the diverse flavors and quality of the dishes make it a premier food destination.
Hong Kong is known for having some of the best food in Asia so we gave ourselves 24 hours to
find out if it really lives up to the hype. In this video we're going on a food adventure
trying some of Hong Kong's most iconic dishes from classic local breakfasts to famous street food and
some of the city's most popular dishes. At the end of this video we'll decide whether Hong Kong
deserves its reputation as one of Asia's best food destinations. So without further ado let's eat.
That's proper indulgent. Today we are going to one of Hong Kong's most iconic brunch spots.
This place is called Kam Wah Cafe and they are famous for a very very good pineapple bun. So yeah
we're going to need to check this one out. Okay pineapple bun has been secured. The fun thing
about this is there's actually no pineapple in here. It gets its name from the kind of sugar
topping. The way they bake it the kind of encasing cracks and it looks like a pineapple skin. So
that's where it gets its name from. I was really confused because I actually thought I was getting
an infused pineapple bun but hey it looks bloody fantastic so we're very happy. Inside there should
be a thick bit of butter in there. Look at that. That looks very tasty. Thank you. And we've just
had our second dish arrive. We've also gone for a ham sandwich as well to try. Oh wow that's so
tasty isn't it? I love the gooey salty butter in the middle. The bun's hot and the butter's melted
and it's just absolutely delicious. The top layer on these buns are so unique. I've never had
a like bun or pastry like this where it's like super kind of fluffy and fresh on the inside.
That butter as well is so like comforting and then the top is this like sugary salty and crunchy.
You can buy these buns in most bakeries in Hong Kong. A lot of them they don't serve them warm
with the butter inside so definitely if you're in Hong Kong come to a cafe or a milk tea restaurant
where you can get it hot with that butter because it just elevates it doesn't it. Thank you so much.
Just had our milk tea arrive as well. Very good cup of coffee. It's nice. No frills. What I like
about these sort of places they're so chaotic and fast. There's lots of sharing tables. People are
moving around the whole time. It's quick service and yeah it's just like that chaotic Hong Kong
energy which we've loved so far. How was the milk tea? Yeah milk tea I think I want a sugar in it
actually. I think I'm going to add a sugar to that. Yeah it's nice. It's a really nice tea flavour.
Yeah it's kind of it's quite similar to like an English breakfast tea isn't it? Yeah like milky
tea. Yeah it does need a sugar as does my coffee as well but that bun 10 out of 10. That bun honestly
top foodie bite here. I think it's fair to say we were off to a flying start with Kam Wah Cafe.
Next we're heading to another Hong Kong institution the Australian Dairy Company
to try some of their famous breakfast dishes. We're in the iconic Australian Dairy Company.
We've been served our food lightly and fast. It's arrived probably like 30 seconds. Literally 30
seconds. We have got the macaroni soup with ham. We have perfectly scrambled eggs and we also have
the iconic Hong Kong French toast. Let's start with dessert. I feel like you're going to need
to pass me the syrup straight away. Look at this toast. Wow. Mmm that is so tasty. It's um if you
know the Lyle's golden syrup it tastes like that. That is so nice wow. Like a warm hug in your mouth
wow. The toast is actually like it's really light and fluffy like it's not what I was expecting.
I was expecting the French toast to be almost like heavy like filled with all it's like almost
like battery. It's really fluffy and really light and then the flavour is like fantastic.
Yeah yeah. Let's try the eggs next. The eggs yeah. Go on now. They look great. They look perfectly glossy
don't they? They do a good job with the toast here and the scrambled eggs look bloody good as well.
Let's try. Also really good. It's so tasty. Yeah. Really nice eggs. Wow.
They're so glossy. Good no? Really good. Should we try quickly there? We'll try the soup now before
we tuck into the meal. I have never had pasta for breakfast um so very intrigued by this. So this
one is a chicken soup with macaroni in it and then you've got ham on top as well so yeah an
interesting combination. Interesting combination. It's kind of like you've got your Heinz chicken
soup from the cupboard you've got your little macaroni and you've got the ham that's been in
the back of the fridge. And you wait for ham on top. It's like yeah you've not been to the shop in
weeks and it's uh putting together what's ever left in the store cupboard kind of meal.
Chicken soup is really nice to be fair. It's literally what it says on the tin. Chicken soup
with pasta in it. It's kind of like a Hong Kong version of a minestrone. Overall we really enjoyed
our meal and the french toast and glossy scrambled eggs were definitely the highlights. We only waited
10 minutes for a table so we definitely recommend giving this spot a try if you're in the area.
After brunch we explored Kowloon before hopping on the Star Ferry over to Hong Kong Island. By then
we'd worked up an appetite so it was of course time for another Hong Kong classic. So we are in
Chung Hing Kee's famous pan-fried bun place and yeah we've ordered the signature pork pan-fried
buns and apparently they are scalding hot inside so you have to be very careful. There's warning
signs everywhere saying that the soup is scalding hot so you're meant to yeah take a tiny bite,
suck all the soup out and then enjoy. I told you to take a small bite carefully and slowly
suck the soup out. Oh my gosh that is delicious. Wow. That's actually very unique. The pork inside
sitting with all the soup gives it so much flavour. Time for a bite I think. Yeah all right. I think
I'm at that stage. Let's go. All right sure maybe let you go first and see how hot it is.
It's still bloody hot. Okay I'm in. I've got some leakage but I'm in and yeah that is brilliant.
Really really good. Crispy on the bottom from the pan-fried yeah and really good flavour inside as
well. Yeah I love it. It's fair to say that the pork buns easily live up to the hype. After that
we found an afternoon coffee spot that was quite literally freezing. Minus 86 degree coffee here at
De Mont's building and yeah it's absolutely freezing at the start and the glass is completely
frozen as you can see and then yeah by the time you drink your coffee it's gone it's gone from
hot coffee to cold coffee. I don't even know why I'm drinking my ice for this but it tastes pretty
good. So we have completely demolished our minus 86 degree coffee. It's actually now completely
frozen in the bottom of our cup. We've got some frozen milk in there which is not the most
appetizing but this is 68 Hong Kong dollars which is about £6.80 so yeah it's quite expensive but
yeah if you're here in the area then yeah have yourself a little coffee boost why not. The coffee
was definitely a fun novelty but at almost £7 we'd recommend sharing one. Next it was time to see
Hong Kong from the water so we hopped on the iconic Aqualuna for afternoon tea. We are on the
famous Aqualuna cruise here on the Victoria Harbour and we've got an amazing afternoon tea
set here as well and the views are so beautiful. Yeah we're very very lucky to experience this.
We've got an amazing spread of dim sum, different afternoon tea cakes, we've got a little glass of
rouge as well to enjoy for the afternoon so feeling very lucky. Not too shabby. All right we're tucking
in and so far so good. Yeah I'm going to try the next dumpling which are all filled with shrimp so
yeah Megan unfortunately is not going to have any of these dumplings because it's got shrimp in for
her but yeah I've had one very tasty let's try this one. This one looks like a beautiful colour
it's almost like I don't know mixing with like seaweed or pepper oh it's truffle. Yeah I got
the menu this morning and a lot of them I can't eat unfortunately but he's got a truffle and shrimp
dumpling so enjoy that. It's very tasty to be fair yeah very nice it's like the truffle in the
dumpling casing yeah kind of just like brings it all together and you've got the tasty shrimp
in the centre as well. One I can have is the Wagyu beef and I've eaten half of mine
and it was absolutely delicious it's got a delicious peppery flavour the pastry is really
flaky and yeah this one is very tasty. After enjoying an afternoon on the harbour we tried
one of Hong Kong's most iconic local dishes. Trying the famous beef brisket let's give this a go
That is so tender wow that is really tasty. Are you getting on?
Are they good? Show the camera. This place specifically was called Mac Man Kee which
has won quite a few mission mission guide awards so yeah pretty tasty beef brisket. Yeah it was
very tender. After another successful meal it was time to see if Hong Kong could impress us on a
drinks front too so we headed to Bar Leone which was recently named the best bar in the world.
Honestly we had an incredible time here we tried their signature smoked olive filthy martini which
was seriously punchy and we also loved their variations on the Negroni and delicious bar
snacks. The next morning we were up bright and early to see Hong Kong from Victoria Peak and
just when we thought this morning couldn't get any better we spotted The Bake House the famous
Hong Kong bakery known for its legendary egg tarts. They were very very tasty we also had an
amazing view over Hong Kong city we had a really good cup of coffee and yeah highly recommend that
Bake House branch it was very very good. Super flaky tarts very similar to the ones you get in Portugal
yeah exquisite yeah really really tasty but yeah the views from that cafe at the Bake House at the
Victoria's Peak the view and that brings us to the end of our epic 24-hour food tour through Hong
Kong. So does the food scene live up to the hype? For us it absolutely does we know we barely
scratched the surface in 24 hours and we can't wait to come back and eat our way through even
more of Hong Kong on our next trip. If you enjoyed this video don't forget to like and subscribe for
