This morning, for the first time,
the Department of Justice will have election monitors in all 50 states.
Yeah, the announcement coming down just a couple of hours ago.
Devin Truby is live in one of the counties where
this would be affected here,
along with many other counties in California, with much more.
Devin, good morning to you.
Absolutely, Andre. We are in Alameda County,
which is one of those counties that will be receiving monitors.
There is a total of four in the state of California.
That also includes Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Diego.
We just spoke with the Registrar of Voters for Alameda County
and they said that they actually received notice
that this was going to happen last week.
They said there's going to be four teams in Alameda County,
but they said they do not know how many or which polling locations
and in which cities these teams will be.
be out at to monitor. Now, I will note that all four counties
that are receiving monitors in the state of California
were all blue in the 2024 presidential election.
The Alameda County also tells us that they did have monitors here
for that election as well. So nothing new to them.
In total, there will be 1000 monitors across the United States.
We spoke to the registrar about what this means
for the election taking place today.
Well, it's not the first time that the Department
of Justice has sent out monitors to monitor our elections and at first,
okay, we've had that before.
We've also met with them as we have in the past.
Everything seems to be the same as they've said in the past and we've
been provided the numbers and they're working with us to let us know
if they find any issues to contact our office with a direct number.
Do you have any idea what cities or polling locations they may visit?
No I don't. There's about four teams out in Alameda County
visiting the vote centers today and they'll let us know if
they run into any concerns that they might have.
Monitors will be personnel from the Civil Rights Division,
Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney's Office
and federal observers from the Office of Personnel Management.
We're told that these will be individuals dressed in business casual.
They do have a badge. They must check in at each voting center.
So they go up to that table. They speak to the captain.
They sign in at that sheet. So Alameda County will know where
these folks have been and who was at each of the polling locations.
They said there really shouldn't be any disruption
to the public and that the public.
They truly shouldn't notice that they're there.
They have all of their captains
and staff trained to have these conversations with monitors
and will be in constant conversation throughout the day.
The Department of Justice is calling
this the largest voting monitor operation ever.
Reporting live in Alameda County, Devin Truby, KTVU, Fox 2 News.
It is 8.30.
