Boston Public Schools shakeup: 3 schools could close under major new plan

Three schools in the city reconfigure two and relocate three. Start you with those expected to close. This just coming out here in the last hour. They are East Boston Early Education Center, Greater Eggleston High School and as expected here following some reports over the week in Charlestown High School where enrollment has fallen sharply in the last three years. The superintendent says students will be better served though in the end. We're talking about decisions that impact people, children, families. And so our goal is always collectively to get students into a better experience, one that actually allows us to fulfill the commitment of a high quality experience. Now, in addition to three closures, the district is recommending reconfiguring Joseph Hurley High School into a pre-K through sixth grade campus. Same for the Joyce Kilmer School. Those changes would take effect beginning in the fall of 2028. The proposal also has Boston Green Academy relocating to the South Boston Building that same year. Boston International High School and Newcomers Academy and the Boston Adult Technical Academy would co-locate to the Cleveland Building Building as early as next fall. Now, the Boston School Committee is expected to vote On these recommendations at Wednesday's hearing, the closures and consolidations would reduce the number of schools carry in the city to 97. But that is in line with the district's long term plan to have about 95 schools by 2030.
