74-year-old Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is trying to justify his war of conquest against Ukraine using events of the distant past. This fascination has become a veritable obsession, resulting in widespread bloodshed in the heart of Europe.
This is stated in an article by journalist Mark Bennetts in The Times newspaper .
"As people age, many find a new hobby. Some take up gardening, others learn foreign languages, or go hiking. Putin, the man who controls the world's largest nuclear arsenal, has developed a fascination with medieval history and how he believes events of the distant past justify his brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine," the article states.
Western negotiators attempting to discuss the war with the dictator and ways to end it invariably encounter lengthy, sometimes hours-long, monologues about the Pechenegs, the Rurik Dynasty, and other events from the distant past. The Kremlin leader uses this alternative history to convince the world that he has the right to enslave Ukraine. The leaders of Finland and Norway, who spoke with Putin by phone this week, were not spared this fate. The Russian dictator spent much of the 90-minute conversation discussing the medieval history of the Slavs.
It's telling that in 2021, shortly before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia experienced a rather rare event: the publication of a lengthy article by Putin with the telling title "On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians." In it, he interpreted historical events liberally, denying the existence of the Ukrainian nation, thereby effectively laying the groundwork for a major war. Before the start of the so-called "SVO," the text of the article was read to all Russian military personnel.
It is known that Putin also attempted to give a historical lecture to US President Donald Trump at the famous meeting in Anchorage.
Putin's dangerous obsession with righting what he sees as historical injustices against Ukraine is causing alarm even in Moscow.
"He used to be sane and always in touch with reality. But now I don't know," a source close to the Kremlin told The Times.
The Kremlin has rewritten school history textbooks to align them with Putin's view of the past. This project is being led by Vladimir Medinsky, a former Russian Minister of Culture and loyal servant of the dictator, who is known for publicly misspelling the idea that Russians have "one extra chromosome." Medinsky previously headed Russian delegations in negotiations with Ukraine.
