Some breaking news now.
Five explosions have been reported on Iran's Qeshm Island,
according to Iranian media.
The explosions occurred in rapid succession. Some residents
have also reported seeing two aircraft flying over the island.
Iranian authorities are yet
to comment. Let's get the latest from Mohamed Val,
who is joining us from Tehran. Mohamed,
what more are you hearing at this hour about these reported explosions?
Mohammed, aside from those five explosions reported in Kashm Island
and those eyewitnesses talking about seeing two aircraft
in the skies of the of the island,
we also have other reports about more explosions this time around
in Bandar Lenge in the south near the the Strait of Hormuz.
And those explosions, according to local eyewitnesses,
came from the direction of the sea.
We have seen some of this happening almost every single night.
Explosions in those areas,
some of them related to IRGC action against ships
that they say are violating the
regulations by taking the unauthorized routes there
in the Strait of Hormuz.
Sometimes also it is just an activity in the area,
the military taking measures or getting ready for the war.
This is something that the Iranians here talk about regularly,
that they are taking whatever necessary action
or training every day, every night.
Yesterday they announced about some explosions
not even far from Tehran,
but they told the population that this is not something to panic about
because it has to do with the preparation for the war.
So this is basically what we have as of now,
but we know that also there is tension in the area.
There is anticipation because of this talk about either war or peace,
and people are uncertain whether there will be a resumption
of war even before the midterm election in the United States.
And also at the same time, there are expectations
for negotiations that might lead to another course of action.
Mohamed, you mentioned that there
are expectations about potential negotiations,
which leads me to my second question to you.
If any more details have emerged about discussions
or potential discussions
that Iranian officials are engaged in or might
be engaged in going forward on the diplomatic front.
Well, according to local media,
there is a Qatari delegation that came here late Monday.
So that indicates a continuation of efforts on the part
of the intermediaries, the Qataris and the Pakistanis.
The Iranians were also in Doha for that purpose.
And the day before that, the Qataris were here in Tehran.
So clearly and definitively, there is an effort that is going on.
By the mediators and also by the Iranians here for these negotiations
to continue and there is talk about exchange of messages between
the Iranians and Americans through these mediators.
Every side is demanding that its proposals be put on the table.
The Americans are insisting that the nuclear file should
be discussed in the first place,
should be discussed in the first phase of these negotiations
and there is pressure from the Americans that the Iranians should.
The country, the Iranians are still insisting that this is not going to happen.
We know also that the Iranians have sent an envo
y even to China, and there are reports that China might
be interested in stepping into this, this total this o
verall activity
by so
me kind of mediation.
So yes, there is an ongoing effort for mediation at the last minute
Just hours before the elections in the United States start.
And that's because people here
and in the region would like to see peace instead of war.
All right. That's Al Jazeera's Mohamed Val Laifers
with all the latest from Tehran.
Mohamed, thanks for bringing us up to speed.
