Early morning Thursday, just before 4 a.m.,
police say they got a call that three people
broke into the back door of a home and attacked four adults,
a father, mother, their two adult
children, using a handgun and a hammer.
Some have life-altering injuries.
Thankfully not life-threatening injuries.
That is the good news. The father is the head of a
Toronto real estate group, Mac Group.
75-year-old David Morton along with his two adult daughters
were shot. He and his wife also hit in the head with a hammer.
Police described this as an appalling
The level of violence that happened
as the family was just sleeping in their home.
Police had been looking for three suspects.
We knew that.
But now they've identified one of the people
that they say they're looking for.
His name is Dijon Richards, 23 years old.
Interestingly enough, they say on the morning of the home invasion,
Richards walked into hospital with a gunshot wound.
They believe that he was shot in the right shoulder
by one of the other suspects.
And as is protocol in that case.
Police were contacted.
Police attended the hospital. They interviewed him
and then the hospital discharged him early yesterday afternoon.
Just a few hours later, police say that they made the link
that this was one of the people that they were looking for. And now.
When someone walks into a hospital, there's a lot of things that need
to happen in the period of time from when we become aware of them
to us forming the reasonable grounds that we need to make an arrest
and link that person to the crime of this home invasion.
So through hard work and diligent investigation, including our partners
at the Centre for Forensic Science and excellent canvassing
of officers out in the community, we were able to make that link.
Still looking for two other suspects
who fled the scene in a dark-coloured SUV,
wearing dark clothing, masks, in their 20s.
Not much to go on there.
