Toronto police say they have identified
a suspect in a violent home invasion in
Toronto's affluent Bridle Path neighborhood.
The attack left a man and his two adult
daughters with gunshot wounds. The man and a fourth victim were hit
With a hammer as well.
It's an awful story.
CBC's Linda Ward has been following this for us.
So Linda, what did we learn from the police earlier?
Yeah, so we learned a few more details about what happened
that early morning Thursday.
Just before 4 a.m., police say they got a call that three people broke
in to the back door of a home and attacked four adults.
A father, mother, their two adult children using
a handgun and a hammer.
And police had been looking for three suspects.
We knew that.
But now they've identified one of the people that.
They say they're looking for, his name is Dijon Richards, 23 years old.
They've released this photograph.
Interestingly enough they say on the morning
of the home invasion Richards walked into hospital
with a gunshot wound.
They believe that he was shot in the right shoulder by one of the other
suspects and as is protocol in that case police were contacted.
Police attended the hospital.
They interviewed him
and then the hospital discharged him early yesterday afternoon.
Just a few hours later, police say that they made the link.
That this was one of the people that they were looking for.
And now he's missing.
Inspector Christie Smith with the Hold-up Squad spoke about that.
When someone walks into a hospital there's a lot
of things that need to happen in in the period of
time from when we become aware of them to us forming
the reasonable grounds that we need to
make an arrest and link that person to the crime of this home invasion.
So through like hard work
and diligent investigation including
our partners at the Centre for Forensic Science
and excellent canvassing of officers out
in the community we were able to make that link.
Their advice to Richards, get a lawyer, turn yourself in.
They say he is considered armed and dangerous.
So if you see him, do not approach.
They're also still looking for two other suspects
who fled the scene in a dark-colored SUV,
wearing dark clothing, masks, in their 20s.
Not much to go on there.
Yikes, the police.
A lot of questions for the police in this as well,
but let's talk about the victims.
What are we learning on that front?
Yeah, a little bit more about their condition right now.
We know that some were released from hospital, some remain in hospital.
The split they didn't say, but some have life-altering injuries.
Thankfully, not life-threatening injuries.
That is the good news.
The father is the head of a Toronto real estate group,
Mac Group.
75-year-old David Morton,
along with his two adult daughters, were shot.
He and his wife also hit in the head with a hammer.
Police described this as an appalling...
Level of violence that happened as the family
was just sleeping in their home.
The community, of course, concerned.
Police say they are going to have
an increased presence in the community
for the time being anyway.
OK, CBC's Linda Ward. Thanks so much, Linda.
You're welcome.
