16 different fire departments battling a brush fire
in Worthington today, spreading across four and a half acres of land.
Going to the scene myself, I see crews finishing up,
putting out the flames and what damage is left in the area.
It was very dry with the wind, and that burned very quickly.
From a flourishing nature scene to a scorched terrain,
flames coming after a tree falling on power lines,
sweeping through four and a half acres of land in Worthington,
bringing in 16 fire agencies and over 80 firefighters
working together to contain the blaze.
Manpower is the biggest thing that we needed today
with the rough terrain and the steep hillside.
Asking for help. It was the first half hour.
Things were pretty crazy before we started getting some extra help
in the back us up and get things under control.
The Worthington Fire Department arriving to the scene
on Huntington Road around noon, seeing a fallen tree
and power lines in the roadway ignited. Eversource cutting the power
so fire crews could get to work putting out the flames.
Worthington FD watching the fire grow.
And causing the fire to spread so rapidly,
that would be the dry conditions we are experiencing.
Due to lack of rainfall for the past few weeks,
the ground is dry, the grass, the leaves,
all burning to a crisp in this area of Worthington.
The hillside charred in black, the smell
of burnt wood lingering in the air, trees fallen over, singed.
The wind reaching between 25 to 35 miles per hour,
blowing the flames into another spot.
Sizzling the ground beneath it.
The Worthington Fire Department calling in crews from Westampton,
Hatfield, Plainfield, Huntington and more.
Plus getting assistance from a drone.
The scene clearing around 5 p.m.
Putting a brush fire out like this is very strenuous.
The guys had to carry five gallon backpacks on their back
and also hand tools.
And we were able to use some fire hose off the trucks.
Dragging that hose up the steep terrain is also tough work.
Crews from the Worthington Fire Department will
be making their rounds in the woods
searching for any more remaining hot spots.
