Smoke was seen rising near Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport on Saturday, October 31. According to Russian independent outlet ASTRA, the fire originated in a wooded area north of the airport, close to the Sheremetyevo fuel storage facility. The exact cause of the blaze and what is burning have not been established. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Russian air defences had intercepted 15 drones heading towards the capital since the morning. In an earlier update, he reported that 11 drones had been shot down.
Sheremetyevo Airport rejected reports that an air-raid alert had been issued, saying images circulating online were from earlier incidents and did not show the airport’s current situation. Flight arrivals and departures were temporarily restricted on Saturday morning. Drone attacks have repeatedly disrupted air traffic across Russia, particularly around Moscow. In late October, hundreds of flights were cancelled or delayed as the capital’s airports suspended operations. On October 23, all four major Moscow airports – Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo and Zhukovsky – temporarily halted flights, forcing airlines to divert aircraft and leaving passengers stranded.
According to Euronews, the four Moscow airports accumulated 101 hours of closures during the first half of October, more than twice the total recorded throughout September.
