So we were able to give 55 suitcases to foster kids.
That's amazing.
So we celebrated for a cause.
Glad you're spreading the word about
that because it's such an unknown, right?
And people don't know that.
She looks great.
It's such a great cause.
You look like you could be Mr. USA.
Don't tempt me.
I kept trying to snatch some crowns.
Oh, I know, I know.
We're just obsessed on this Friday.
Guys, happy Halloween.
Happy Friday.
Thank you so much for hanging out with us.
We had such a good time.
Call that hotline, 202-895-3200.
Give us your take on all the things we talked about today.
It was a little wild, but you know, it's Friday.
It's a Halloween weekend.
We're getting into the spirit.
And you know what else is getting into the spirit?
Not the weather, because it's going to be gorgeous this weekend.
We're going to talk about what you can wear
when you're going out trick-or-treating.
No coats this time.
No tricks, only treats.
Okay, the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden has
been under construction for years now.
This museum has not been updated since the 70s.
They are unveiling some new things today.
And the midterms are just days away.
After we get through this weekend, it is all systems go.
Early voting is picking up in so many locations around the DMV.
We're getting expert analysis of it.
You are in the zone.
Welcome into the DMV zone. We're taking you behind the scenes of all
the big things Fox 5 is working on in real time on this Friday.
I'm Home by Ash. Thank you so much for being with us.
Let's jump right in with weekend weather, Halloween weather.
Everyone wants to know,
is it going to stay as beautiful as it has all week?
Let's take a live look out at our camera in Ruston station.
Blue skies as far as the eye can see. Caitlin, I am loving.
Every single second of this.
This is the kind of fall we love.
It has been an amazing couple of weeks.
And today, it's really warm.
Parts of the area have hit 80.
Oh, my gosh.
It's not like typical late October.
But, no, I do want to say by tomorrow, much cooler.
Yeah.
So, it's still nice, but we won't be sweating in our costumes.
And you may even need a layer
or two as we get past sunset tomorrow evening.
So, clouds will be on the rise.
Temperatures will fall.
Halloween is still dry.
Trick-or-treating still looks great.
But I know today, this afternoon, is really a stunner out there.
With all the abundant sunshine and the leaves are changing,
it looks beautiful as we take a live look from Reston Station.
And it will be a great weekend for all activities.
And we'll go through all of them for you,
starting off with your Friday afternoon, Halloween Eve.
Schools, very busy with Halloween parties.
Maybe you are, too.
There's a lot going on tonight.
It's 76 degrees at this hour under sunny skies.
Nice breeze out of the north and west, too.
So that front has passed us by, but temperatures are still quite warm.
In fact, we're at 80 Quantico and Fredericksburg,
78 in Leonardtown, 76 in Baltimore, 75 at
Dulles and 72 in Winchester.
Just beautiful.
Satellite and radar all quiet.
Again, we are not tracking rain for days and days.
That is not coming until later next week.
So if you're in costume tonight, this is the mild one for sure.
I mean, at 5 o'clock, we're still in the 70s.
Falling through the 60s after sunset,
but a warm feel for the second to last day here in October.
Overnight tonight, that cooler air settles in,
so we're back into the low to mid 40s to start off your Halloween.
It does look like we'll begin with sunshine.
Clouds will roll in in the afternoon, but again, staying dry and,
you know, appropriately cooler for trick-or-treat
and Halloween festivities tomorrow evening.
November begins on Sunday, so does standard time.
We've been talking about this all week,
but another reminder that the timing has synced up perfectly this year
because Halloween's on a Saturday, and after all the festivities,
an extra hour of sleep will be much needed.
Tomorrow's planner shows sun giving way
to just a little bit of late cloud cover.
Notice those temperatures only in the low to mid-60s.
Today, we've been in the upper 70s, so it will definitely feel cooler.
63 for the high Saturday, and then same thing on Sunday.
Clouds giving way to maybe a little bit of late-day sunshine.
Staying dry, 64 degrees.
So first up with the sunset change, yes, we fall back.
Sun goes down tomorrow night at 6.08.
So if you begin the trick-or-treating,
especially with the little ones, 4 or 5 o'clock,
you've got a lot of time before the sun goes down.
And then, even so,
it's not like the next day where the sun sets at 5.07 p.m.
We then begin those 5 p.m. sunsets,
which eventually become 4 p.m. sunsets.
Well, in the 4 p.m. hour, not 4.00.
All right, we also have a big football game this weekend.
Sunday night with the Eagles in town against the Commanders.
Kickoff's at 8:30.
This is like three and a half hours after the sun sets.
So even the tailgating, I mean, early tailgating,
you're in the dry, sunny weather.
But then it gets dark quickly.
It'll be chilly.
What normal chill for November 1st.
Temperatures in the 50s and staying dry for our Sunday night.
Now, we know the rain's holding off until late next week.
As a result, we will stay very warm.
It has been a warm fall ever since we started the season.
Meteorological fall September 1st. It's been very, very warm.
November is going to continue that trend, at least for now.
High pressure is very strong next week.
It's going to take a while until some moisture can get in here.
And interestingly, it almost looks like our storm coming out
of the Atlantic here could have some tropical origins.
But regardless, whether it's just the cold front
or the cold front paired with an extra tropical low,
rain is likely by Thursday. But again, that's Thursday.
The Thursday-Friday time frame is what we're nailing
for the best chance and the next chance for any rain.
And by then it will have been about
Three weeks so much needed. There's your seven day forecast.
So we get back to work in school
and we're still seeing 70s on the map here in November.
Chance of rain showing up there by next Thursday. So Halloween.
I mean, really, Homa. All good. Not as warm as today.
No, but you know, perfect for costumes that have a couple layers on.
Yes. Couldn't ask for better. Election Day looks good.
I mean, the entire next week we will take it for this time of year.
The clock's turning back, not so much, but we'll see.
That hits you hard.
Yeah.
I mean, Monday will be rough for numerous reasons for everybody.
It'll be rough for everybody.
I mean, we literally have Halloween clocks going back,
Commanders Sunday night, so just
expect to be tired on Monday.
All the things.
Okay.
Caitlin, thank you.
Moving on to topic number two,
a federal judge is opening an investigation into potential
DOJ misconduct when it comes
to the Trump administration's plans to close East Potomac
Park golf course in D.C.
The heated courtroom exchange centers on whether government attorneys
were transparent with the court about the closure
and whether they may have crossed ethical lines.
So joining us now, judiciary reporter for Bloomberg Law,
Suzanne Moniak. Suzanne, thank you so much for being with us.
Thank you so much for having me.
Okay, so if you've been in this court,
which I have several times during this case,
as it has been ongoing when it comes to East Potomac Park,
things get very heated very quickly because you have one side saying,
the government saying, we're not doing
anything wrong, we're abiding by all rules,
and the judge and the plaintiffs in this case saying,
you guys are doing things that are wrong
and you're doing it without telling people in the right way.
What was the latest that happened today?
That's right. There have been a number
of tense exchanges throughout this case,
and we saw them come to a head yet again today when,
as you mentioned, Judge Ana Reyes
ordered an ethics inquiry into whether government lawyers
at the Justice Department and other
agencies may have made false statements in court.
They are defending against a case
challenging Donald Trump's proposed renovations
to the East Potomac Park golf course.
And the judge wants to look into essentially what the government knew.
And when the government made statements in court
in the past saying that there were no plans to close the course,
they then reversed course and said that now there are.
Trump, of course, has announced that it will be closing in November.
So November 15th is the date that the president has given
for shutting down this golf course.
And again, Dana Ray is saying, wait, wait, wait, you can't do that.
I already told you you can't have construction.
You can't be cutting down the trees.
Well, the trees have been cut down, many of them, hundreds of them.
In fact, the golf course is looming to be shut down.
I guess to clear up for people,
what can the president do without congressional approval
or without judge approval as things keep moving forward?
That's really what's at the heart of this case.
The D.C. Preservation League and two Washington
area golfers have argued that the president
can't just fully destroy the golf course
and build a new one without this kind of, you
know, without legal authorization.
Specifically, they're arguing without undergoing environmental,
legally required environmental
reviews.
And so in this case, the judge has already found that.
She finds that the groups are likely to succeed on that claim
and has ordered the government
not to remove any trees for the duration of the case
and to give the court 10 business
days notice before making any irreversible
changes or closing the court.
Of course,
they've already given notice that they plan to close the course.
OK, so at this point,
is the course closing on November 15th or could that still change?
I never want to say that nothing could change in court today.
Stanley Woodward, third-ranking official of the Justice Department,
kind of even made a point of saying we're scheduled to close,
like we are intending to close,
but, of course, made a point of noting
that he would not violate a court ruling
if the court were to say that they can't.
There hasn't been a request for that yet,
but I think one would be likely to come
from the challengers in this case who may seek, as soon as next week,
to block the closure that's scheduled for next month.
Okay, so two weeks from that proposed closure
and we'll see what happens.
happens as this case continues to move through federal courts.
Suzanne Moniak, thank you so much.
Thank you again. All right, moving on to topic number three,
the clock is ticking for early
voters across the DMV.
Early voting wraps up tomorrow in Virginia, while D.C. voters have
until Sunday to cast their ballots ahead
of Tuesday's midterms. In Virginia, polls for
early voting will be open Saturday,
with some polls open from 8:30 to 5 p.m. Just make sure
you're double-checking with your locality.
Times are kind of different some places.
This is in D.C. Early voting centers will be open from 8 p.m.
8.30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
If you're voting by mail in D.C., Maryland and Virginia,
those have to be postmarked on or by Election Day,
which is November 3rd, of course.
A reminder, just because you put
a ballot in the mailbox on Election Day,
it does not guarantee it will be postmarked on that day.
So just some key things to keep in mind.
Joining us now, Virginia Public Radio reporter Michael Pope
to talk midterm elections in Virginia.
Michael, good to see you, my friend.
It's great to be back.
Okay, what are we seeing in terms of early voting?
People go into the polls as early voting wraps up in the Commonwealth.
Record amounts of early voting.
So there's a great website that tracks early voting data,
the Virginia Public Access Project.
And one thing that they do from a data standpoint that's really helpful
is they compare the amount of early voting at this point in this
election versus early voting at this point in previous elections.
So if you...
Take away the presidential years and compare this to previous midterms.
You will see the current amount of early voting way exceeds
the voting for previous midterms.
In fact, the last it's more than double the last midterm.
It's actually right up around presidential level.
So clearly this is an effort.
This is an election that's capturing the attention of voters and really
pushing them to the polls to cast an early ballot in this election.
And what specifically is driving folks to it?
Is it issues?
Is it people?
Is it candidates?
Is it just in response to President Trump
and the current administration?
All of that.
I mean, certainly people in the Washington,
D.C. region are driven by national politics.
But even outside of that, you know, we're seeing data centers
as being something that people are concerned about.
Your energy bills going through the roof because of data centers.
So these are kind of interrelated.
Also, I mean, you could put all
of that under the umbrella of affordability.
And so these are all issues
that are motivating voters to head to the polls.
And, you know, people.
We'll always focus on the congressional
elections, which, of course, are important.
And Democrats are trying to flip three Republican districts.
But voters will also have local elections here.
And so your listeners in Fairfax City will have local elections.
Arlington, Leesburg, Percival, Herndon.
I mean, at the local level, we will also see a lot
of very important elections on the ballot in this election.
And those are hugely important.
And I'm glad that you bring those up because those are the
ones that are most likely going to impact your day
to day lives. So if you have not gotten out
in Virginia, if you haven't early voted yet,
if you're waiting until Election Day, please do
cast your ballot. It is so important.
Like you said, record numbers this year. So
it seems like people are heeding that advice to get out
and make their voices heard.
And we will see what happens come Tuesday. Michael Pope
with Virginia Public Radio.
Thank you so much, as always, for your insight.
Thank you.
All right.
We're going to take a quick break.
We have lots more to come here on the DMV Zone on your Friday.
Stay with us.
Welcome back.
After nearly four years behind construction barriers,
the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden is finally reopening this Saturday
with a weekend of free celebrations and activities for visitors.
Joining us now, Axios reporter Mimi Montgomery to tell us all about it.
Hi, Mimi.
Happy Friday.
Hi, happy Friday. Thanks for having me.
Okay, so the Hirshhorn hasn't really been touched since the 70s.
It is such a gem right in the heart of downtown D.C.
What can people expect when it opens back up?
Yeah, so this is the biggest update the museum has seen since the 70s.
It almost doubles the number of sculptures on display,
and it really sort of revamps things
for folks to spend a whole day there.
So to start, they expanded the entryway from the National Mall
to sort of, you know, encourage people
to come in and connect the two of them.
And there are a ton of new sculptures on display
from big names like Kaws and Jeff Koons,
some really famous modern artists.
And there's a really cool new sort of like interactive piece
that takes folks from the garden underneath the museum
and up to the museum's plaza
in this tunnel that was previously closed since
the 1980s. It is now covered with
these sort of fun house style mirrors.
So it's almost like an interactive art piece.
That folks can walk through. Yeah, it's a really impressive overhaul.
Things are set up so that, you know, you start in the west side,
which is a rotating series of exhibits.
It's focused on sculptors from the 21st century.
So you'll see a bunch of different folks come
by and do rotating galleries there.
And then there's a central plaza,
which is set up for more performances, events, what
have you.
And it has a reflecting pool that can actually
be drained for more seating, which is kind
of cool.
And then the east side is sort of like a retrospective
of sculpture artists from the 20th century.
It includes some of the works that folks might have
been familiar with from the Hirshhorn
already.
So some Picassos, a Matisse, Yoko Ono's Wish Tree will be there.
So it's set up so folks can sort of take like a little journey
across all of its sculpture pieces there.
So cool. And the Hirshhorn is almost sometimes a forgotten museum,
even though it is right there with all the others.
It doesn't get a lot of the fanfare
as the National Gallery or, you know, things of that nature.
But what I'm seeing on screen
right now is like this standing pool.
I mean, it is very interactive. It is very cool. It is fun
for all ages. I take my kids there a lot
because you can go a million times and there are still
new things to see. And as you've explained,
kind of this journey that they've set up for
for people to walk through.
Will be fascinating to see.
Yeah, yeah.
And like you said, there's always something new for people to see.
It's set up so that there can be a series
of rotating exhibits, different events.
I think they want to make it, you know,
an interactive sort of changing space for folks.
So it sounds like there will be new and
exciting things coming down the pipeline.
Awesome.
And it is open on Saturday.
Are they doing any kind of big celebration to,
you know, ribbon cut, I guess?
Yeah. So it opens tomorrow, Saturday.
They will be doing a big celebration. There will be lots of,
you know, like art craft supplies that kiddos and,
you know, the crafty adults can do. There's
going to be like a photo station.
I think they'll have like a scavenger hunt. There will be some of
the artists whose works are on display will
be there in person to give talks to folks as well.
So there's lots of programming on Saturday.
I think it's going to be a beautiful day if people
kind of want to, you know, start
their spooky festivities with a little bit of culture
I'm sure earlier in the day.
There is no shortage of culture there, that is for sure.
Mimi Montgomery with Axios, thank you so much.
Thanks for joining us. Appreciate you, as always.
Thanks for having me.
This magical moment brought to you by your local McDonald's.
The Washington Capitals putting another game in the win column,
beating the Nashville Predators on the road last night.
Alex Tuch scoring the go-ahead goal with 10 minutes left in the third,
which is now his 10th of the season.
Defenseman Cole Hutson also scored two goals on the night.
Caps extending their win streak to three games with 4-3 victory.
Their next game is at home on Sunday against the Minnesota Wild.
DMV Zone is back right after this.
Try the all-new Red Bull Dragonberry Energizer,
only at participating McDonald's.
Welcome back to Fox 5.
Good Day Halloween show was this morning,
and of course, we had a spooktacular time.
They always do it big.
They always do it so well.
Let's take a look.
Good Day D.C. Halloween,
the Family Feud game coming up next.
We'll be right back.
What is that?
It's not as cold as your heart, but nonetheless.
What did you put on this?
Is this an egg?
What is that?
Is that a tomato with something on it?
Yes, what's on it?
It's a ketchup.
Ketchup.
Good job.
Perfect.
We all ready to play the feud.
Let me in.
Come on.
Our favorite character is battling alpha bragging rights.
Talk a little bit about this,
and we'll use the demon dog as an example, the evolution
of scares throughout the years.
Yes, everybody talks about technology
and how we introduce technology in The Haunt,
and that is one of them.
You know, an animatronic,
we know it's got its limited range and it can only go so far.
This is like an animatronic off the leash.
It's the top DMV sports team.
Let me see.
I want you to think about this,
Uncle Jesse, and I'm going to tell you why.
Because if you get this wrong, the other team is going
to have the opportunity to walk away with this victory.
Uncle Jesse, what you got when we're
talking about the top DMV sports teams?
I'm going to go baseball on this one.
I'm going Washington Nationals.
Let me see Washington Nationals.
handbags or hand sanitizer in the world for this for me,
but I'm gonna let you guys. So I would
never, but I'm so excited to watch.
So Maverick, you go first. What am I doing here? Yeah. Okay.
You have to guess what. Whoa. Oh, that's easy.
That's a cauliflower. Broccoli. Cauliflower.
Well, it's supposed to be brains, but yes, it's broccoli.
Broccoli. Broccoli.
You got it.
Broccoli.
I just quit my job.
Uh, he is, he's not nearly as old as he looks,
we'll tell you that, but he's got a throne
and we're going to see what's happening.
And I had to go all the way out there to Loudoun County
so that nobody else see me.
Let me see.
Now, team, they got one more chance.
If you get this wrong, then the other team has an opportunity to steal.
Now, Maverick, I know you're flowing all over the world.
Can you fly here into the DMV and get this right?
The DMV suburb county top is?
I'm going to fly into northern Virginia,
and I'm going to fly down to represent Prince William County.
Let me see Prince William County.
Everybody for being
part of our honor here.
Amazing.
Special players have made so much effort here.
Eliza.
Eliza, special hugs to you for pulling off this show.
Yes, huge shout out to everybody coming together.
It takes a lot of work, a lot of effort,
and it shows clearly because it is such an incredible time.
We love watching it as viewers,
and we're so glad that you guys took part in it.
Shout out to all the producers and the crew, and of course the talent.
We're back right after this.
I'm starting to speak now.
Welcome back. As families get ready to celebrate Halloween,
safety experts are reminding parents and trick-or-treaters
to take some extra precautions before they head out,
from choosing visible costumes and carrying flashlights
to just staying alert around traffic, checking candy before eating it.
There's some few simple steps that can really help keep the night fun
and safe for everyone.
Joining us now, Associate Medical Director at MedStar Health,
Urgent Care, Amanda Joy. Amanda, good to see you as always.
Good to see you. Happy Halloween.
Happy Halloween. We are getting ready. Halloween on a Saturday. I mean,
everybody's going to be out. All the
trick-or-treaters are ready. The costumes are
good to go. What is kind of your biggest advice,
especially working in that urgent care? What do
you see come through most often on Halloween?
Well, there are a couple of big things that we like
to remind parents about, and that's traffic.
We want to make sure there's some sort of brightly lit clothing,
make sure the kids are crossing at crosswalks, those sort of things,
because we have seen pedestrian related injuries.
Check the candy. I know it's hard to keep your little ones out
of their candy bag before they get back to the house.
But it is...
Good to inspect the candy before you allow them
to eat it to make sure nothing's tampered with or
seems off. For your little, little ones, your toddlers,
your infants, watch for choking hazards.
So you want to avoid smaller candies,
things that can cause choking.
Yeah, it is so important to be visible.
You know, we get really caught up in just putting on the costume
and going out in the dark and having it be spooky.
But, you know, there are still cars on the road.
So that is a really great point that you bring up.
In terms of checking the candy,
what have you guys seen come into the urgent care?
Is it a real issue with kids?
It's not a frequent issue, but sometimes we do see children
who maybe are behaving a little abnormally
and the parents are wondering, could the candy have been tampered with?
We don't see a lot of that, so I don't want to put fear
in parents' minds, but I think it is good instruction.
Make sure it's not been opened.
Nothing looks like it's been, you know, altered in any way would be important.
It doesn't hurt. It doesn't hurt to have an extra set of eyes on it,
especially when kids have that giant bucket
and they're dumping it out and they're going crazy with it.
In your medical opinion, is there such thing as too much candy
on Halloween or do we just let them have at it and gorge themselves?
Because sometimes kids don't know when to stop.
Yes, that's the other thing we do see a lot of,
not so much on Halloween, but the days following is some GI issues.
So eating that much candy can certainly upset stomachs,
so we certainly would recommend.
Parents limit the amount of candy that the children are eating,
not to mention chocolate
contains caffeine. So if your kids
are before bedtime consuming a bunch of candy that contains
chocolate, it could definitely lead to a long night for parents.
Okay, it's going to be a long
night for everyone, Amanda. It is Halloween on a Saturday.
We're going to be out celebrating.
Thank you so much for your insight. Appreciate it as always.
Alright, calling all animal lovers, Paws in the Park is returning
to Old Town Alexandria this Sunday for a day of furry friends,
family fun, and community activities.
The free festival will feature adoptable animals, local vendors,
live music, food, and of course a pet costume contest.
Joining us now, Senior Manager of Communications
at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, Aaron Shackelford,
to tell us all about it. Good to see you, Aaron.
Good to see you guys.
Okay, so Paws in the Park actually got rained out earlier this month.
It's happening again this Sunday.
Are you guys ready?
We are so ready.
The weather looks like it's going to be beautiful.
So, yes, we're ready to be out there this Sunday, November 1st.
It's from 11 to 4 at Orinoco Bay Park in Old Town,
Alexandria, along the waterfront.
I know you guys prepped for this for months and months
because it is Northern Virginia's
largest fall festival for animal lovers.
What can people expect when they come out there?
It's a free event so people are encouraged to come out.
We have lots of vendors so lots of
shopping. We have our largest rescue row in history
so we have almost 20 animal rescues
and animal welfare organizations there
that will have adoptable animals so if you have been looking
to maybe add an adoptable dog
or cat to your home this would be a great time to kind of meet a lot
in one space. We have some live music all day long.
We have a family fun tent so lots of great
Great activities for kids.
So it's just going to be a really fun day.
There's beer, wine, cider, coffee, food trucks.
It's just, it's going to be lovely.
You got it.
And probably the most entertaining thing, pets in costume.
Like, who doesn't love that?
What can people expect when it comes to that?
Can they bring their own pets dressed up,
or are you guys handling all that?
So we do have a costume contest. It happens at 1:30 in the afternoon.
We do encourage people to register online on our website.
It's pawsintheparkva.com.
So if they go on there, they can register in advance.
It is getting kind of full.
But of course, even if you don't want to enter the contest,
there are so many people that come out with their animals and costumes.
And walking around, it's a fun day anyway.
Yeah, it's going to be beautiful.
It's going to be a good time.
I know the Animal Welfare League,
you guys are celebrating your 80th anniversary this year.
So, of course, the event, the day is going to be all that more special.
Yeah. So we have a couple extra surprises, some other goodies.
If you come and visit us at the
AWL Village, we're going to have all kinds of 80th merchandise.
We'll have some special treats
for humans and dogs. So yeah, this is our 80th.
We've been serving the community since 1946.
So this year is extra special
and we're glad we were able to reschedule it for this weekend.
Yeah. I can't wait. Sunday, it is going to be a good time.
You have a pet behind you,
right? Who's that? Before I let you go.
Yes, Lainey was here.
She just abandoned this interview, but she will be at Paws in the Park
this weekend too, potentially.
So we'll have some of our own adoptable animals. But yes,
Lainey was just here, but she's over it now.
Great. Dogs, cats, a good cause. Lainey said,
I've had enough of you. This is my 15 minutes.
Erin, thank you so much. Good to see you. I
hope it is a great event. You're going to have great weather for it.
Yes. Thank you so much. All right. Moving on. You know what?
Halloween costumes do not have to break the bank.
So walk with me as we go into what we're calling box costumes, I guess.
We're making this up. One moving company showing families how
to turn everyday cardboard boxes into creative.
Kid-friendly costumes.
So there's some fun DIY ideas, easy step-by-step tutorials.
They're just like a really fun way to get creative
with your kiddos while you're recycling
what you already have at home.
So here with us today, two men in a truck,
marketing coordinator Samantha Barber and
sales team lead.
Eric Vo, guys, good to see you.
Thank you so much for being with us.
Absolutely.
I love it.
Eric, Sam, thank you so much for joining us.
I love a good box costume because we're inundated right now
in our lives with Amazon boxes, right?
We're getting stuff delivered every single day.
What better way than to just put it to good use?
Yeah.
Okay, so walk me through what you guys have here.
Yeah, so we used the packing boxes that we had,
and we designed a pizza, a little card,
and a milk carton, just with things around the house.
Okay, this is actually so simple and so clever.
So you just add a little twine.
Exactly.
This is perfect for people like me
who don't really want to get into Halloween, but like...
Also, really, who buys their Halloween costumes anymore, right?
It's a little outdated, early 2000s.
Yeah.
Make it.
Make it! Make it!
A little construction paper, scissors, you got it.
You know, and like when you mentioned it's
a good activity to do with your kids.
Like my kids would love to do this,
not just for Halloween, but like on a Tuesday.
Yeah, and plus it's like a great bonding moment between you
and your kids and doing something creative.
It's not like you're just watching TV.
Yeah, okay, so I could be a pizza, I could be, um...
The queen of hearts.
Yeah, yeah.
A playing card.
It could be a fun, you know, group costume.
A card of milk.
Oh, okay.
So this one's really, yeah, this one's really simple.
And then I love this one.
Yes.
How do you even...
It's a little tricky.
It goes, like, over the head.
Yes.
Okay.
Okay.
Here, I'll be the mannequin that you can test it on.
Okay.
Okay.
And then you can put your arms through.
Okay.
Okay.
Oh, ah, yes, hello.
Okay.
Okay.
You can put your arms through.
Okay.
Here she is.
Okay.
Yes, there you go.
All right, there we go.
Okay.
Okay.
This is very cute.
Okay.
And then can you box somebody a cookie so you're like a cookie?
Okay.
Exactly, exactly.
I mean, it's cardboard.
It's a material you can use in virtually anything.
So you could be a car, you could be a motorcycle,
as long as you are crafty enough.
You know, what is the kind of biggest benefit of going,
like, the box route versus buying a costume?
Cost effective.
I mean, these were with materials we had around the warehouse,
so, you know, things you would
have in your house, glue, tape, you know, cardboard.
Plus it's white, you know, now it's getting
a little colder, but sometimes it's hot.
Not going to be stuffy at all in comparison to some other fabrics.
I love this idea.
One year I dressed my kids up as a UPS truck.
Oh, my God.
Used a box.
That's adorable.
Put it on a wagon, and that was it, and the dog was the delivery man.
Right.
And, you know, everyone has boxes laying around these days.
Yes, especially.
Awesome, awesome.
And where can people learn more about you guys?
Well, 2menandtruck.com. I mean, there's 350 of us domestically.
So, I mean, there's plenty
of locations you can visit. Us specifically,
we're in Alexandria, Virginia and Fredericksburg
and we service most of the DMV.
So, you can just give us a call and you can get all the
information you need.
Awesome. Thank you guys for the good ideas.
I'm going to take this home with me and have
my husband eat the cookies in my meal.
Yes, 100%.
I love it.
Damn, Eric. Appreciate it.
Thank you. Thank you so much.
Halloween
is tomorrow
and what better way
to get into the
spooky spirit
with some spooky
spirits. So whether you're hosting a Halloween party
or just looking to shake up your cocktail
routine, we have you covered.
Joining us now is Greg Long, lead bartender at Allegory Bar in D.C.
who's going to show us how to mix up
the perfect drinks for the Halloween celebrations this
weekend. Thanks so much for being with us.
Absolutely. We got some fun stuff going on.
Okay. Let's get into it. Absolutely.
We're going to start off with our spritz. So you've heard of
a Hugo spritz? Yes. I love a good spritz. Awesome.
You've heard of a gin and tonic? Uh-huh. Oh,
But we have a Frankenstein version of them.
What's going on here?
A Frankenstein version.
Oh, yes.
Oh, yes.
So we're going to start off with an ounce
of our gin right here, Bombay Sapphire.
It's got a really nice acidity to it,
really good lemon kind of vibes going on.
Really nice botanicals.
It is a perfect entry-level gin.
If you are not a huge gin drinker, this will get you going.
And then we're going to go ahead
and go a half ounce of that St. Germain here.
Okay.
So that gives us the little spritzy part.
That Hugo Spritz kind of vibe because we're going to get that going.
And then to bring it all together, we have our tonic water.
Yes, the bubbles. That's what I'm here for.
So this is going to bring it all together for you.
And we are going to ice this down.
It's not a Hugo Spritz,
and thus we got some mint going on as well here.
So we are going to take some of it,
and you've got to release these oils, right?
So you're going to go ahead and give it a little...
I've never seen anybody slap a mint like that.
A little slap.
Okay, Greg.
Get it in there.
And also, for a gin and tonic vibe, lemon or lime is acceptable.
I'm more of a lime guy or lemon guy.
What's the difference?
I mean, does it change the drink?
It depends on what kind of acid you want to go with.
So for me, I like a little bit more tart.
Okay.
So we're going to go a little bit more tart here.
And so you've got your Hugo Spritz.
Okay, cheers.
And this is the Bewitched Bloom here.
Oh, that is very refreshing.
Very refreshing because it's going to be a warmer kind of Halloween.
So this will get you going during the day drinking
as we move into our early evening and night.
And we're starting today.
OK, we got 24 hours to go and we're going to have a good time.
This is really good.
I'm glad you know that the mint slap is what did it.
It really helps.
OK, brings it all together.
I didn't know that's a little bartender.
Get those get those oils out.
OK, what's next?
Next one, we're going with our Crimson Curse,
which is going to be our Negroni.
So as it starts to get a little darker,
We are going to have a nice cocktail
that can take you out by a, you know, a little
bonfire situation or inside as we get cozy, however, whatever.
This is the fire cocktail.
Oh, yes.
You've got to sit by a fire and enjoy this one.
Oh, yes.
But, again, we are doing a little bit of that red bitter element.
We know color.
Yes.
Red for Halloween.
Get a little bloody.
And then we've got that sweet vermouth as well.
So that's going to bring these things nice together.
As well, we have, again, staying with that Bombay.
It is the perfect entry point for all of these things.
And it really is a very versatile gin.
Okay, yeah. So what, you know, you're recommending the Bombay.
What makes it so easy to start with?
I think sometimes people look at spirits and they think,
ooh, am I going to get the right one?
You know, I don't really know how to make cocktails.
Let me just pour a glass of wine and give a beer. It's not that hard.
No, it's not. And especially like some things get a little,
get a little crazy and, you know, you get a little too niche,
but this is really, it's all spectrum.
Yeah, it's a good base.
Absolutely. This is where you want to start.
And honestly, you'll find yourself finishing with this as well.
Okay.
So then we're going to give this a quick little stir here.
Just get it nice and chilled down.
All right.
We are going to pour into this glass here.
This is the Crimson Curse.
This is the Crimson Curse, a.k.a. your Negroni.
And how are you topping this off?
What are the accoutrements?
Oh, we got some accoutrements coming.
Okay.
I know he does.
Finish with a little ice here.
We're going to go a lemon peel again,
bringing out those citrus notes from the gin.
Want to just kind of bring it all together, blend it together.
And then it does have a sweetness to it.
So what goes with a little sweet?
A little bit of salty.
So this is why the little secret ingredient here, that olive for you.
These are why we have you on, Greg.
These bartender tips and tricks that we can steal from you.
I try.
Okay, cheers.
The Crimson Curse.
Let's see how this one is.
This is very giving fireplace.
Oh, yes.
Refreshing, but still to warm you up later on.
And then you hit me with, like, that cinnamony flavor at the end of it.
That is very good.
These are both, I mean, these are, like,
two different ends of the spectrum right now,
but I can see how you can celebrate all weekend long with this.
Are you guys expecting packed house tonight, tomorrow, all weekend?
I mean, Halloween on a Saturday.
Halloween on a Saturday.
You ready?
I hope so.
I'll be there in my costume.
What are you wearing?
I got a Charmander onesie.
And you didn't want to wear it for us?
You didn't think Fox 5 deserved?
It's not Halloween yet.
You didn't think we needed all that?
I wasn't ready for y'all.
You weren't ready.
We weren't ready for you either.
We appreciate it.
Where can people find you guys?
We are at Allegory.
We are going to be at 12th and K
in the Eaton Hotel right behind the bookcase.
So you got the liquor shelves all stocked this weekend.
Everything is ready to go.
Everything is ready to go.
And when does the party start?
5 o'clock every day.
5 o'clock every day at the Allegory Hotel.
Thank you so much, Gregory.
Appreciate it.
Thank you so much.
I love to have you.
Cheers.
Okay, you didn't make yourself a drink.
Well, there's a few up here, so, you know.
There we go.
Happy Halloween, my friend.
Okay, they're making me move on. I could do this all day.
Halloween apparently is starting early
for a Prince George's County neighborhood.
One of our proud sponsors kicking off its annual District Heights
and Price Bennett Fall Festival.
Jennifer Delgado is joining us live
from the District Heights Rec Center with all the fun.
Jen, what are you getting into?
I'm getting into a little bit of Halloween fun.
It's not too spooky, but I tell you what, it is just right.
We are out here at the Recreation Center,
and I've got some really cute kids with me.
Tell me, who are you dressed up as?
Velma.
Velma, a little Scooby-Doo action.
What about you?
You want the mic, huh?
Who are you dressed up as?
Tell me who she is.
Daphne.
Daphne, okay.
And what about you?
Fred.
Fred, all right.
Let's run out of here just a little bit
so we can go over there and talk to all the people.
Ready?
Let's go.
Yay!
Let's run on out of here.
We're at the Recreation Center, and Halloween fun is getting off
a little bit early, and it is going to be a safe alternative for kids
who may want to go out trick-or-treating tomorrow.
They can come down here to the Recreation Center
where things will be nice and fun and safe.
Now, joining me right now for the Fall Festival and one of the proud
sponsors, we're going to be talking to Seth Benowitz and you and Scout.
And this is going to be a good time tonight.
It hasn't started yet, but it's open to the public and opens up at 630.
Right, it's 6:30.
We're partnering with District Heights.
We have the chief here and we're
We're really excited because we think
that having kids a place that they can come, parents
can relax, kids will get some candy,
it'll be safe, all in an enclosed environment.
We're really excited.
6:30 to 9:30 at the District Heights Rec Center.
That's right.
You know, and you want kids to have a safe time and a fun time.
They shouldn't have to worry about, you know,
being out on the streets or things that could
happen.
No, of course not.
And like, I think that if adults take a little bit of time,
I mean, Halloween can be a little
tricky.
It's on a weekend this year, which can make it
a little bit more crazy, but having something
like that.
this with a little bit of planning. Parents can come.
We'll have a canyon of petting zoos.
And petting dogs, too. This is little Scout.
Scout is petting me right now as we speak. Scout,
we just met over here. But Scout is one
of the cuties that we have here. But we're going to
show some of the animals a little bit later
on in the four o'clock hour. And joining me right now,
we have our chief and Chief Banton.
You know, how does this feel for you? It probably takes
a lot of stress off you as well as your police department, too.
It is a great time. Let me just
I tell you, the activities we have planned,
the candy we're going to have, the cars we're going to decorate.
We're going to have a lot of fun.
That petting zoo, I can't wait.
We enjoy it so much.
We enjoy an opportunity to invest in our community
because they invest in us.
That's right.
You know,
and how many kids do you think are going to be coming out here tonight?
So we're expecting about 2,000 kids out here.
2,000?
You got enough candy?
We got plenty of candy.
Otherwise, we'll have to Uber eat some more candy.
We are very prepared.
We have some great, let me tell you,
Price Benowitz has been a great community partner with us.
We have plenty of candy to give out.
Right.
You've got this down.
And you guys have partnered before
in the past with the backpacks as well.
So we were giving away backpacks for a number of years.
And this year we created a carnival in concert
with District Heights right here where we had thousands of kids.
We gave out backpacks.
We had all sorts of get ready for school vaccines.
All of that.
So we decided, hey, let's re-wrap.
Let's bring the team back together.
Bigger and better than ever.
And let's do this for Halloween.
And speaking of bigger and better,
there's a raffle for a big prize as well.
There is.
We have an iPad raffle.
And Scout will be helpful in picking the winner.
And we can't wait to see everybody here.
Because we got to see the blueprint with the Backpack Carnival.
If you were there for that, it was amazing.
Several thousand people.
And here with the Chief and District Heights,
we're really excited to see what tonight's
going to bring.
Right.
And the good news is, while you have part of it indoors, you have...
We have some outside, too, and the weather is spectacular.
I mean, last time we've had temperatures in the 70s on a Halloween,
and then we're rolling back the clocks
this week, so there's a lot going on.
So we have indoor events.
We've got outdoor events.
We've got the cars out in the parking lot inside here.
It's going to look great.
And then when we get outside, even better.
And that weather, oh, my God.
All right, let me ask you.
I don't want to put you on the spot, but what's your favorite candy?
I'm sort of a Milky Way dark guy.
Oh, you're old school.
Old school.
Old school.
What about you?
Give me a Tootsie Pop.
Tootsie Pop.
I like a Tootsie Roll.
Apparently, we're all old people over here.
You can see some of the goodies that they have.
Now, this is just to start.
Oh, wait.
We've got...
We've got ears we can put on our bats.
Nobody told me we had accessories that we could throw on as well.
You know, it's so nice to be out here today.
How does it feel for you to give back to the community?
It's great.
Price Benowitz, we've really made it
a huge initiative recently to give back to the community.
And we love supporting District Heights in this community as well.
All right.
Well, hopefully, hopefully somebody,
maybe one of you guys will be the lucky winners for the iPad.
And so let me ask you, what's your favorite candy?
That's a hard question.
A hard question.
Well, we'll give you time.
You can answer it maybe in the next hour.
You can answer it, too.
This one apparently is ripe to be a reporter at Fox 5.
We're going to send it back over to you.
A good time for sure.
Chief, you can put this on.
It's okay.
It's okay.
Stay tuned.
Jim, the chief said I'm going to leave us hanging, huh?
I have my own mask I'll be putting on later.
Okay, he's got a mask.
You can still wear the headband, too.
I mean, you don't have any hair to hold back.
Exactly.
Jennifer, you go get yourself a handcuffs after this, girl.
You've got to calm down.
All right.
I appreciate it.
I appreciate y'all.
Thank you so much.
It looks like such a good time.
They are having a great time out there.
We love to see it, and we'll see them again in the 4 o'clock hour.
We're going to take a quick break and be right back.
Hi.
Five seconds, I was told.
So join the Zoom room in your costume.
7.30 tonight on Fox Live.
Just judge.
Better.
Happy Friday, my friends.
I'll see you in just a few.
Hi, how's it going?
The News at 4 starts right now.
