Gun found in box of candy at D.C. school, Virginia teacher charged in separate incident

Tonight, new details about how loaded guns got onto school campuses in D.C. and northern Virginia. Yeah, so Monday in Manassas Park and yesterday Fox 5 first reported about a gun that was found in a box of Halloween candy in northwest D.C. Fox 5's Bob Barnard back in Manassas Park tonight. And Bob, we are learning more about what forced schools to close down there, correct? Yeah, that's right. According to court documents, Manassas Park High School art teacher Veronica Guchre told police she dropped her loaded handgun here at school last weekend, but didn't realize it until after it was discovered early Monday morning. The incident forced Manassas Park officials to close all four of the city's public schools Monday. According to the statement of charges, Goutre says she believes she dropped the gun in the parking lot last Saturday while switching her belongings to her private car. Didn't notice the handgun was missing until Monday. When it was found by a fellow staffer and turned over to Manassas Park Police. This is the 31-year-old Goudre's mugshot from the court documents. She's charged with a felony, possession of a firearm on school property. She's out on bail, has been placed on administrative leave by the school system. The documents say she has no criminal history, no mention of why she owns a handgun. Meantime, we're hearing from parents of students at a public charter school in northwest D.C. KIPP Academy in Shaw. Police are investigating how a loaded handgun got into a box of candy about to be distributed to young students at the school. The gun, a nine millimeter Glock like this one with bullets in a magazine, was discovered by a teacher Thursday afternoon just before three o'clock. The school says no students came into contact with the gun before it was turned over to police. The email we got just said they were distributing candy and that they found a gun. No students knew about it. Administrators took care of it. But that was it. I haven't heard anything since. But we had a parent-teacher conference today, so I'm coming up to you. I was going to ask the administration about it, see if we can get some more details on it. They immediately followed protocol that was required. So I'm trusting, hopefully, that everything was done the way it was supposed to have been done. That's scary. Thank God no child or teacher, nobody got hurt. Still no word from D.C. police how that gun found its way into the box of candy and onto the Kipps school grounds. Now, back here in Northern Virginia, I called our teacher, Veronica Guthrie, at her home in Loudoun County this afternoon, but she hung up before I could finish introducing myself. She has a court date coming up in a few weeks. Guys.
