James Kaufman, World News Report Today.
Ladies and gentlemen, we're not in a geomagnetic storm,
but we just got nailed by a huge X-class solar flare.
Bad news.
Direct hit, Earth-facing, period.
This is the worst-case scenario here.
It happened right before 800 UTC time,
about 1 a.m. Central here in the U.S.
God bless you guys. It was quite a flare.
See how intense it looks like it was. We're looking at
about, well, a 1.8. Get a better reading now.
All right, we guessed 1.8x, 1.79.
Picked at 735 UTC
time, right about 1230 central time here in the U.S. A big, big flare.
Directly earth-facing, I saw the coronal mass ejection be emitted,
so there's no question it's inbound.
And by the expression I saw, look at this plasma jumping.
Actually, it looks like it jumps over to it
and creates another sunspot group here.
Unbelievable.
A lot of it has been caught back by the sun.
That's a huge coronal mass ejection.
Exactly, earth-facing, earth-bound.
A totally bad position, the worst we could be in.
All right, that might have been emitted from 4274,
but it looks like it joined another sunspot that's not even named yet,
that will probably now be named.
What a huge filament eruption, or coronal mass eruption.
We have two different, well...
These are beta gamma sunspots, 4276,
4277, everything else is simple,
4272, 4275, 4278, and 4279.
Well, the big bad boy,
4274, just nailed us.
It couldn't be any more earth-facing than it was.
This is our miscalculation of 50 centimeters cubed.
They've got nothing updated whatsoever.
They're all asleep at the wheel as usual.
Sad. Sad, but true.
They thought that the coronal hole would hit on the 7th
and hit on the 6th.
This is getting embarrassing for, well, NOAA and NASA, right?
All right, it looks like it pops off right over the Indian Ocean.
A very, very big flare here.
And probably an associated coronal mass ejection inbound.
Y'all get ready.
We never know what side of Earth will be solar-facing
when that ejection gets here.
In summary, a directly Earth-facing 1.8 X-class solar flare.
Put your boots on.
You're going to need it.
This was a big one.
Directly Earth-facing.
God bless. Please share and subscribe. Always remember,
anything's possible in Bizarro World. God bless.
