James Kaufman, World News Report today.
China's new electromagnetic catapult flat-top carrier.
This is only the second electromagnetic flat-top carrier in the world.
The USS Gerald Ford is the only other one in existence.
And that's our latest and greatest,
the one we made and commissioned last, our nuclear carrier.
China has now formally commissioned
its first catapult-equipped aircraft carrier, the Fujian,
into service. The commissioning ceremony
put particular emphasis on the ship's
electromagnetically-powered catapults,
with President Xi Jinping shown pressing the launch
button inside the control bubble built into the flight deck.
This all notably comes after U.S. President Donald
Trump pledged last week to sign an executive order
that will compel the U.S. Navy to go back
to using steam-powered catapults on future carriers.
Why? I don't know.
Notice in the background is one
of China's other carriers, the Shandong,
which has no catapult system
but uses a ski-jump bow instead of a catapult.
There's been signs earlier this week that the Fujian
Which has received the hull number 18
as officially entered operational service.
As has been made clear,
the Fujian is only the second flat top carrier in the world.
And only the second carrier to be equipped
with electromagnetic catapults.
Also referred to as electromagnetic aircraft launch systems or EMALs.
This is obviously an especially significant feature
of the carrier's design.
This allows much larger planes to be launched.
There are actually two EMALs aboard this flat-top carrier.
As mentioned before, there is currently only one other flat-top carrier
in service globally with EMALs.
The U.S. Navy's USS Gerald R. Ford, our nuclear carrier.
Which is the U.S.'s newest carrier.
God bless you and yours, folks.
