Streaming from the 22 News Broadcast Center,
this is 22 News at 4 p.m. Digital Edition.
Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to 22 News at 4.
I'm Claire Overton. We'll get to your top four at 4 in just a moment,
but first, we always have a look at commuter traffic and weather.
Let's bring in 22 News Storm Team Meteorologist Brian Lapis.
Brian, I love the color orange today.
Love your color orange today. Nice job.
Thanks.
And I guess it's good that we're wearing the colors today
because the leaves are falling off
the trees quickly today with the wind that we have.
It is a quite mild day today, quite nice outside.
Yeah, we got up into the mid-60s.
The wind that we're experiencing now is part of a cooling process
that you'll really feel tomorrow
and actually Sunday morning will be in the 20s.
Wow. But we're getting too far ahead of ourselves. I know.
Let's talk about 60s still. Yeah. And also traffic.
Although traffic really is not much of a problem right now.
The pike looks good. Oh, there's a little slowdown here
on the pike westbound between Palmer and Ludlow. And there's
the usual slowdown right now at the end of 291 where it merges with 91.
Otherwise, no major problems, which is certainly.
Good news for us as we get this weekend underway.
Notice the wind gusting over 30 miles per hour.
Very high brush fire danger this afternoon.
We've had a couple of reports of some scattered brush fires.
It's best not to burn outside
and be careful of disposal of smoking materials as well.
Will not take much more than a little spark to start
a brush fire here with these dry conditions and the wind blowing.
All right, so.
As Claire and I were talking about,
we're still hanging on to the low 60s,
but we'll be in the 50s, I expect,
up and down the valley before 5 o'clock,
the way things are rolling right now in terms of the wind situation
and the cooling process.
Scattered clouds now and a bright weekend,
including dry trick-or-treating weather.
We'll show you with our 22 News Storm Team forecast.
Four families in Three Rivers are now without
a home following a two alarm apartment fire this morning.
The Three Rivers Fire Department says crews were notified of the fire
that stretched from 2019 to 2021 at Front Street around one
in the morning. When they got there, firefighters saw flames coming
from the second floor and smoke coming out of the attic.
They were able to put out the fire and save two cats.
The department did not say if anyone was hurt,
but the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
All lanes are back open on the westbound side
of Mass Pike after a crash in Warren this morning.
Mass State Police say troopers responded to a reported
hit-and-run crash involving a tractor trailer and a box truck
on the westbound side of the highway near mile marker 69.
A preliminary investigation found the box truck rolled over
into the woods on the right side of the highway.
The tractor-trailer continued on before stopping
at a truck parking area at exit 51 in Chicopee.
The driver of the box truck was taken
to the hospital with minor injuries.
That crash is still under investigation.
Springfield Mayor Dominic Sarno says progress is being made
on the cleanup of the former Vibra Hospital property on State Street.
Sarno says the owners have cleared the front
of the property of vegetation overgrowth, trash
and other debris as they are committed to after a court agreement.
He added that work on the back of the property is ongoing.
The city has taken the owner to court multiple times since the hospital
closed in 2018 over the condition of the property and safety concerns.
Lindsay Clancy's civil attorney says
his client's medical records showed warning signs
of homicidal ideation before the deaths of her three children.
In an interview with News Nation, Andrew Meyer accuses Clancy's
Fifteen medical providers have not communicating with each other
and prescribing 15 different medications.
Attorneys for the medical providers are asking
to dismiss the wrongful death lawsuit,
arguing that Massachusetts law generally protects mental
health providers for crimes committed by their clients.
On Wednesday, that dismissal motion
was taken under advisement with no immediate ruling.
And now let's get a check at today's weather.
Brian, we actually have a rather large growing brush fire
in Worthington that our crews are on their way to right now.
Yeah, and this is why we've been kind of ringing the bell about being
real careful with any outdoor flame because what's happened here
is very much like in the springtime. We've got dry ground.
We haven't had any measurable rainfall since October 11th.
The leaves are now more or less off the trees
and that those dead leaves are great fuel for any kind of brush fire,
you know, trigger like a spark from a rail car or a cigarette butt
that's not properly extinguished. So all of these things
and of course the wind gusting over 30 miles per hour,
all these great ingredients for brush fire. So be real careful.
And even tomorrow when it's less windy, best not to burn outside.
Let's take a look. We could really use some rain around here.
It doesn't look like we're going to get that.
Until next week, clouds and radar right now.
So on the upside, we've got sunshine and temperatures are in the 60s,
which is still a little bit above average here for this time of year.
We move forward, 22 News Storm Team Skycast,
5 o'clock here this afternoon, mostly clear.
A little breezy here, at least through the evening hours,
with evening temperatures falling through the 50s and into the 40s.
And then overnight lows will be in the 30s here tomorrow morning.
Tomorrow's going to be a brilliantly sunny day.
Sunshine rising at 7, sun at 10 o'clock at noon.
A light breeze out of the northwest here tomorrow.
And a high temperature in the mid to upper 50s.
I'm expecting that trick-or-treat weather tomorrow.
It's Halloween, right?
8 o'clock tomorrow evening.
Mostly clear. Temperatures mainly in the 40s.
Then we bottom out in the 20s for Sunday morning.
We'll show you on 22 News starting at 5.
The East Hampton Police Department
is donating over 15 abandoned bicycles to those in need.
Officials say the bicycles were given to Robert Charland,
commonly known as Bob the Bike Guy at Pedal Through Youth.
Charland and his team are refurbishing bicycles
before distributing them to individuals
in need throughout the Pioneer Valley.
The organization donates bikes year-round as a way
to make transportation resources more acceptable.
DoorDash is offering $17 billion to buy the grocery delivery
rival Instacart, a deal that would reshape the industry.
The companies say the merger would expand their reach, giving
customers access to more stores and helping them compete with Amazon.
But critics warn less competition could mean higher prices
for consumers and fewer options for grocery stores.
The deal still needs regulatory approval and could close by early 2028.
Now we have a look at what we're working on for 22 news starting
at five. Multiple crews are responding to a large brush fire
in Worthington that Brian and I were just talking about.
We'll have the latest updates on how firefighters are battling
the flames. Plus, we'll hear from a Wilbraham native about how he
is handling his battle with brain cancer. And finally,
the Massachusetts School Building Authority has approved more than
$140,000 or million dollars in funding for a new school in Springfield.
We'll tell you what parents and students can expect in the new
building. No major problems with traffic
as the Friday evening commute gets underway. Slight
slowdown here end of 291. Nothing out of the ordinary about that.
There is a little slowdown
on the pike westbound. Might be an accident
or some construction or a road hazard there between
Ludlow and Palmer. 91 looks good.
Pike west of the Connecticut River also running smoothly.
We'll update temperatures
for trick-or-treating on 22 News at 5. Claire.
