Breaking news, a man has died after police shot him in Brighton.
Two Boston police officers being evaluated at the hospital right now.
Boston 25 News reporter Daniel Coates live in Brighton.
Daniel, police say the man was having a mental health crisis,
had a knife and then charged at an officer.
That's right. We have a sad update to provide. We're told
that that suspect that was shot by an officer has died today.
Today at Boston Police Headquarters, where I'm right outside
of right now, there was a press conference at 1230.
This new update came about an hour after that.
But this whole scary scene started this morning at around seven
o'clock where police responded to a Brighton home
for what they say was a mental health crisis.
And a man was inside, they say,
with a knife threatening to hurt himself.
Crews were told were about to remove the person
who made that 911 call from the home safely
while they set up a perimeter with EMS around the Selkirk Road home,
again in Brighton around 7 o'clock in the morning.
After 20 minutes of de-escalation and negotiation,
police said that man charged officers on the porch
with a large knife where they retreated
but couldn't retreat any longer.
And fired one shot and hit him in the abdomen.
Now, he was rushed to the hospital.
Police telling us within the last hour, he died there today.
As police and the DA begin this investigation.
Part of the investigation is always looking at all the officers
who were there and the equipment that they had.
But, you know, initially, there were certainly officers
that had other less lethal equipment on scene at the time.
This is still very early on in the investigation.
We're told that the Suffolk County D.A. will
be leading the investigation at this time.
They also said that two Boston police officers
were taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
They say they are expected to be okay,
but we're still early on and still a lot to unpack
about what exactly happened this morning in Brighton.
On to Boston. I'm Daniel Coach for Local Station Boston 25 News.
