Three maritime drones struck a container ship in the Black Sea off the coast of Bulgaria on Wednesday, the country's defence minister said, in the latest of a series of such incidents along NATO's eastern flank. According to Associated Press the attack on the Liberian-flagged Contship Jet occurred shortly before 1 p.m. local time, about 21 nautical miles southeast of the coastal town of Shabla, near Cape Kaliakra in northeastern Bulgaria, Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov told reporters. The crew abandoned the vessel and were rescued by Bulgarian Navy and border police vessels, state news agency BTA reported. The 18 rescued sailors — 14 Filipinos and four Ukrainians — were being taken to the port city of Varna for medical checks. The ship was sailing from the Israeli port of Haifa to Constanța in Romania. It was not immediately clear what the 421 containers on board were carrying. The incident occurred as defence ministers from Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey were meeting in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, for trilateral talks focused on Black Sea security. Bulgarian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Kiril Mihaylov said the attack involved three separate strikes, the first at noon, followed by two strikes involving surface drones. “The Navy promptly launched a search-and-rescue operation. Meanwhile, the French Atlantic maritime patrol aircraft reported that the crew of the struck vessel had begun abandoning ship. All 18 crew members were rescued,” he said. Drone attacks in the exclusive economic zones of Bulgaria and Romania this month have left two people dead, with at least 25 others missing. Russia has not claimed responsibility for the attacks, but suspicion has fallen on Moscow. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev told parliament earlier this month that “the logic points in that direction… The problem is that we cannot prove it.”
