Now at five, five people taken to the hospital
this morning after Phoenix police say an SUV crashed
into a bus stop near 46th Street and Baseline.
Yeah, definitely frightening that intersection shut down
while police investigated
and our Taylor Wertz is joining us now live with more. Taylor.
Yeah, Mark and Ellen, I just spoke with a Phoenix police sergeant
who tells me detectives now believe this whole thing started
when the driver of a white Jeep, the car that we saw on scene just
a few hours ago, ran through a red light. The intersection
reopened about an hour ago,
but you can still see the damage to that bus stop over my shoulder here
where the white Jeep plowed into it.
I also want to show you some video we got from our Skyfox
drone. You can see the trail of skid marks leading up
to where that Jeep crashed. Phoenix Fire says
the vehicle hit four women waiting at the bus stop.
One person was trapped and even required
extraction by crews there.
All four, including two adults and two teenagers, were taken to the
hospital. One of the adult women is reported
to be in critical condition. The driver of the vehicle,
an adult man, was also taken to the hospital in stable condition.
One other person on scene was
evaluated but declined transport.
I just spoke with Phoenix Police Sergeant John Buchanan,
who tells me detectives believe this was all caused
by the driver of that Jeep running a red
light. What detectives determined preliminarily
is that there was a vehicle which was westbound
through the nearby intersection that ran a red light.
Once in the intersection,
it collided with a second vehicle,
which was southbound through the intersection on a green
light. One of those vehicles subsequently lost control.
And as it left the intersection,
it collided with a nearby bus stop.
And that's where these four females were at the time of
the collision.
Police do not believe impairment was a factor in the crash.
But this whole thing is still under investigation.
So once we get more information on exactly what
what happened. We'll be sure to let you know.
