Three people are dead as a result
of a multi-vehicle crash caused by a wrong-way
driver on a county road.
The deadly incident happened Wednesday morning on County Road 22
between Tecumseh and Lakeshore, just east of Manning Road.
Police, firefighters and paramedics
responded shortly after 6 a.m. The collision scene required
the closure of the road section
for more than nine hours.
Essex County OPP said investigators have found that a vehicle entered
the opposite direction of traffic on the roadway.
First, one vehicle was struck, causing minor
damage and no injuries. Then another vehicle
was hit head-on with heavy consequences. The driver
of that vehicle and the driver of the wrong-way vehicle
were both pronounced dead at the scene.
Each of those two vehicles had a passenger.
Police said one passenger died at Windsor Regional
Hospital. The other passenger was airlifted
to the London Health Sciences Centre for further
treatment of critical injuries.
According to OPP, a total of six vehicles were involved in the scene.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the incident remains under investigation.
Lakeshore Mayor Tracy Bailey has issued a statement
thanking first responders for their swift action
and expressing sympathy for all those affected by the situation.
