The British Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee held hearings on the future of the Russian Federation, the stability of Vladimir Putin's regime, and the likelihood of a new uprising similar to Yevgeny Prigozhin's "march on Moscow." Experts also assessed the state of the Russian economy, the mood of the elite, and the effectiveness of Western sanctions. John Lough, a senior fellow at the Center for New Eurasian Strategies, noted that the Russian regime has demonstrated high resilience over the past five years. However, some members of the elite are dissatisfied with the protracted war and the prospect of multi-year sanctions. Discussing possible developments after Putin's death, Laf suggested the formation of a collective leadership similar to the period following Joseph Stalin's death. He estimated that a change in political course could take several years. A repeat of Prigozhin's rebellion is also possible if the current president's authority is sharply weakened. Washington Post journalist Katherine Belton drew attention to internal contradictions within the Russian elite. She also noted that Western sanctions for human rights violations will not necessarily force Russian leaders to change their behavior. Ruth Deyermond , a senior lecturer at King's College London, said the perception of the West as an existential threat would not change without regime change.
Recall, Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin, according to US intelligence agencies, has ordered an increase in sabotage against NATO countries. As The Wall Street Journal reports , citing three European officials familiar with the investigation, one of the first acts of this major campaign was the failed drone attack on Leipzig Airport in Germany. The operation aimed to deploy agents, explosives, and weapons in Europe for attacks on targets used in one way or another to support Ukraine. The operation was coordinated by former Russian officer Oleg Levushkin, recruited by the GRU. Belarusian agents participated in the operation, and Serbia was used as a logistical hub for the delivery of drones and explosive devices to Germany. Following the incident, a Kremlin spokesman maintaining a backchannel with the German government warned Berlin that Leipzig would not be the final target. WSJ sources also report that Serbian authorities have arrested seven suspects accused of participating in a group involved in the procurement and storage of explosives and drones for shipment to the EU. According to Western officials, following the Leipzig incident, sabotage and attacks on drone-related companies, as well as Starlink ground stations in European countries, have increased. In late August, CIA Director John Ratcliffe warned his European counterparts about increased Russian sabotage activity.
