U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg on Wednesday. According to Associated Press the pair discussed the conflict in Ukraine, as U.S. President Donald Trump pushes Kyiv and Moscow to make a deal that stops the fighting. At the meeting with Putin, Witkoff said Russia has released a retired American teacher who had been imprisoned on charges of fighting as a mercenary in Ukraine. Stephen Hubbard, of Michigan, was sentenced after a closed trial in 2024 to nearly seven years in prison. Prosecutors said he had signed a contract with the Ukrainian military after Russia sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022, and that he fought alongside them until being captured two months later. The release occurred at a dynamic moment in relations between the United States, Ukraine and Russia, with the Washington-Kyiv alliance being stretched by tensions over drone support as the Trump administration advances policies that aid Putin. Witkoff has tried without success to steer Russia and Ukraine toward a settlement to end the fighting that will hit the five-year mark in February. The visit to St. Petersburg came a day after Witkoff met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and some European leaders in the Norwegian capital, Oslo and at a time when Trump has taken actions meant to benefit Moscow. Witkoff’s meetings suggested leaders are keen to bring momentum to U.S.-led peace efforts. Efforts by the Trump administration since early last year to end the conflict have made no significant progress, and there was no suggestion of an imminent breakthrough.
