My friend Dash Rendar is a strong dude. Let’s see how his strength helps him with Calisthenics. Is it really that hard and can some skills be learned on your first try?
We see how he does with the L sit, tuck planche, hand stand pushups, archer pushups, and typewriter pushups.

An experienced archer and athlete named Dash Rendar attempts several calisthenics skills for the first time. The video explores how general foundational strength translates to bodyweight exercises and discusses the importance of specific muscle adaptation and stability for both calisthenics and archery.
Welcome back to another video.
I am back with Dash Rendar and you guys have probably seen the
collabs that we have done before.
He let me have a glimpse into his world, into his playground here.
And now it's my turn
to have him take
a step into my world,
into calisthenics. So Dash,
tell us a little bit about your training
experience. You're obviously a fit dude.
We can all see the the physique, the muscles.
What have you done before? I mean for me it's
like the passion is war bows, shooting heavy bows up to 165 pounds
I do activity, I cycle, I
do jiu-jitsu wrestling for a lot
of my life up there, so I have decent
core strength but like not really calisthenics build, like I don't
do like the fancy stuff or
any of the flips or any of the handstands
so this is all like stuff I've never really tried
okay all right, so we're gonna see
which calisthenics skills are the hardest to pick
up and learn for someone who's never done them
and we'll see if Dash can pull them off with zero
training, zero experience in this realm, all right
let's go, okay first skill that I want Dash to try
is going to be the L-sit
so it's basically very core focused, a little bit of upper body, this is
probably one of the easier ones to get, we'll see how he does
but basically you just start here
you're gonna lift your legs out
and you're gonna float above the ground like this, let's see how he
does, all right easy, holding it easy, let's see
if you can lift those legs, oh got it, nice, all right
there you go, look at that L-sit, never really tried
have you ever tried that before? no no I haven't
so he never tried the L-sit before
and totally got it on his first try, just goes to show you that
if you have a foundational skill uh strength
that you've built from just exercising in general
you can start with some
of these more advanced calisthenic skills, let's try the tuck planche
next, the tuck planche is basically a step before the full
or the straddle planche you're going to
have your hips and your knees stay up arms straight
and you're going to hold right there
like that let's see if Dash can get the tuck planche
to it find that balance and then all right
nice good try good try what's the it's just hard hard
to hold your body up right balance too like
it's like like lifting off it's kind of a hard thing
because it's like you have to like slowly
move into it and not jump into it
so it's like a weird motion trying to get into it that way
all right so tuck planche guys
a lot harder than it looks i think with a little practice
he could definitely get it
um a little you just it's developing those specific muscles
for the movement just like with drawing a bow you can be strong
and not be able to draw a war
bow that's because you develop
those muscles through repetition through specific exercises
doing it over and over same thing goes
for calisthenic skills let's see how he fares with
the handstand push-up you know it's easier to do with parallettes
but essentially you just
basically start kind of from here you lift your body up
and then you press and we'll see how Dash
does i'm going to hold his legs a little bit give him
a little balance support and see if he's got
the shoulder and upper body strength to just push
his own body weight up into a handstand push-up
all right oh easy easy so i wasn't helping him i
was just helping with balance i was not pulling
up how did that feel i could tell that you
were assisting with the balance like this i could feel
like my legs were like limp is the thing right i think
that's the biggest difference um honestly
is like i when you're just doing that i can say relatively relaxed
and it's just a shoulder press
because like my legs are just dead weight as opposed
to when you do it you have to be controlling
them right that's definitely i feel like a marked difference
because there's a lot more activation
through the body as opposed to just doing a shoulder press
which is a lot easier than actually
having to control different parts
of your body there you go guys it takes a lot more to do some
of these skills than you guys actually realize
and it takes sometimes months and months of practice
before you can even get one single solid rep
the handstand push-up is a perfect example of skill
and strength so he's got the strength he just doesn't have
the practice and the reps and the
skill developed to do it because it does take some balance
and you're using all of your muscles right
here all the way through your core to balance your body
while you're pressing if you go back
and see how i was doing it i'm basically like finding
that sweet spot all while engaging all
those muscles now this next push-up is perfectly named
for dash it is the archer push-up and i just
did there you go look at that look at that back i just did
a tutorial for three advanced push-ups
that anyone can learn if you're able to do 20 plus push-ups
so dash can you do 20 plus push-ups
yeah easily right obviously i don't even have to ask
but he can easily do 20 plus push-ups so he
can i know for a fact be able to do these the archer
the typewriter i don't remember i keep
blanking on the last one we'll do the archer
and the typewriter and see how he fares on these two
all right the first one is the archer push-up we call it
the archer push-up just because you're
doing this and i guess it looks like you're an archer
when you're shooting that's where the
name comes from perfect for the archer
so you want to get a little bit of a wider grip with
your hands wider stance and then what you're going
to do is just going to come down to one side
keeping those elbows back like
this boom one two essentially it's just a modified one arm push-up
and it looks pretty cool
when you can do this you can impress some people if that's something
you're interested in showing off
your one arm pushing strength let's see how dash does boom
easy he's got it first try nice yeah not too bad
but it's funny too because i can really feel
so a lot of people ask about muscle imbalances
for archery i can really feel in this one here
my left side is super underdeveloped for this there's
a lot less stability because even though
you use both sides of your body there's the lion's share
that's taken by the right side and i can
feel the difference as far as strength
on the right side of my back versus the left side and
my shoulders especially as well
so there you go guys this is a perfect exercise for working on
imbalances because obviously if your left
is weaker you just get extra reps in on the left
versus the right so a question for archery yeah can you
be like versed in both sides of shooting
sure but not like there's not really a good history
of ambidextrous war bow archers because
you can shoot both sides relatively easy you can teach yourself
to do that but to build the muscle
strength over time to actually shoot
a heavy duty bow 150 60 70 plus that's like almost a lifetime
commitment and i've never heard of anyone do that even
the guys like the great like joe gibbs and
other guys they're right side dominant you know
they shoot one way you guys want to see some cool
war ball content by the way i'm going to link
his channel below in the description check it out
we've actually done several collaborations
the best things on youtube yes the best thing you
will ever see on the internet
because we literally test real medieval weapons on each other and today
we're filming a video for his channel as well
so it's going to be sick don't miss it make sure you
guys check it out and subscribe to his channel all right
the last push-up i want dash to try
is going to be the typewriter
so it's like a modified archer you're going to be here and you
stay low and you're just coming across
and it looks like you're a typewriter machine right like
you're just typing on a piece of paper
and this one's really good it's like holding a plank but
it really works the shoulders and that shoulder mobility
and strength when you do this one so
let's see how he does on the typewriters yeah
so you're just kind of going side to side yeah
okay you feel it in your shoulders
a little bit yeah i feel like you can cheat it a little like
of sit into it but to stay upright it's
a little bit harder you know yeah it's easy yeah you're
easier than the archer for sure
because you're just kind of gliding and i do feel like you can
kind of like let your body cheat into it
but it's it's still good i feel that as a good like
accessory for those smaller muscles you don't really hit like
a lot of exercises do you think
there's any practicality for this into what you
do like doing these different shoulder mobilities
yeah i know for sure i mean that's one
of the hardest things is like i do a lot of band work
and things like that to try to hit different muscle groupings
because you need to build up
a lot of those small accessory muscles not the larger ones
and these i think are great for like
building up especially the archer
and the typewriter you know standard push-ups i don't
really do much but that kind
of lateral motion especially since most of that strain comes in
from your body not collapsing
when you have the bow out your shoulder wants to crunch so having
that extra stability with all those little
accessory muscles i think would be really helpful
okay so this stuff translates into many facets
of life guys into maybe cool stuff that you do
like archery and medieval combat and into just being strong
so you can be fit and be able to do
move your body weight around that's what calisthenics
is all about is being proficient
and that is it guys i had dash test out some
of the calisthenics stuff i have obviously been
brought into his world trying out some
of the different things that he does all the time that
he's a master at what did you think about some
of the stuff i thought it was really cool i mean i
think that some of those have really good practical
applications they touched on because i think that
like the bro lifts you get like the big three
or the four right you miss a lot of that stuff
that's helpful and miscellaneous things in life other calisthenics
and those seem like great fits
for just doing those extra little little motions
that you don't get to touch much when you actually
lift a lot of times and literally do anywhere
so that's what i mean like you're traveling you're
out with the family on vacation you really get
a workout in the hotel room by the by the side of
the pool in between your little laps
in between mojitos whatever you're having yeah so i mean
that's the beauty of this is it's for everyone
and anyone anywhere anytime no you guys enjoyed
