Does swinging a giant sword around actually build muscle? Can it be a good workout?
I got a heavy 20 pound wooden sword to put it to the test…in 106 degree heat.

And see if it's actually
a good workout to train
like Guts from Berserk
or Cloud from
Final Fantasy
or even Asta from
our favorite anime shows.
Let's see what this thing is all about.
We are back with another video.
video is gonna be different than anything I've ever made before and for
today's video we are going full viking there's
no secret that warriors in the
past were all strong
because they had to be to wield
weapons to fight in combat
they had to have a certain level
of fitness to be able to basically not die
so today we're gonna train in a unique way
that I recently discovered using a
a great sword we won't be using
these because they are extremely sharp
and i don't feel like chopping off any limbs or any fingers today
victory is mine so without talking too much let's show off what we have
and get right into it now
we see it a lot in hollywood in the movies
in the tv shows where you know medieval warriors
had to be able to do pretty amazing things
in order to survive in battle so they had to
definitely be athletic now i find it hard
to believe that warriors back then had gyms
or weights that they were training with because
everything was practical right so they probably
swung their weapons around practiced their you know battle techniques
and in the process of that
i'm sure that they built some pretty strong upper body muscles
so we are going to put that to the
test with a 20 pound wooden great sword.
Now this is the sword. This thing weighs 20 pounds and I
actually got it from a friend. His name is Ashman.
He goes by Ashman, Ashman Athletics. He actually
makes these wooden swords for training purposes.
So they are balanced just right for you to get a
good workout when you swing these things around.
We're going to put it to the test, give it some
reps try out some of the things that i've seen
on his page see if there's a practical use for it
and see if it's actually a good workout to train like Guts from Berserk
or Cloud from Final Fantasy
or even Asta from our favorite anime shows it is hot as balls out here
so i'm gonna have to keep this
quick and short and to the point
because i'm going to be in a puddle of sweat in about 10 minutes from now
First thing I notice is it is pretty large and heavy for 20 pounds
You know a 20 pound dumbbell feels nothing compared to a 20 pound
greatsword where the weight is dispersed throughout the whole thing
obviously, you're not gonna have too much weight
in the handle here, but the sword itself is
Quite heavy and it's you know
It requires a decent amount of upper body strength
to really move this thing around now
First thing we're gonna do is just some forward swings
So start here and you're gonna bring
the sword down using your muscles to stop it
before it hits the ground and then bringing it back up.
One. Definitely feel
the shoulders holding this thing up and pulling it back up.
You need to use biceps
and arms. Let's switch the side.
So front swings. Oh yeah I feel that. Now let's
test out some of the combos that I've seen
in Ashman's videos. So from the
front swing you bring it down and then you bring it here
and you come back oh yeah some shoulder
mobility in there and i'm already kicking up
a good sweat just from swinging this thing around
i guess you could compare this to a mace bell it would probably
be close to what a mace bell can
do but this thing is quite bulky
so you're not going to be doing all those mace bell swings
very easily without smacking yourself in the head let's give it a try
so we'll go from here
probably turn it sideways no you can do it just
worried i'm gonna smack myself in the head when
i do the behind the head swing
but definitely doable now let's try some other combos so if you
want to get some shoulder work in it is 20 pounds
but you have to use your forearms here to balance
the blade in your hand not smack yourself in the face
but you come down to a kneeling position you
can do the standing and then you're gonna press the sword up
and bring it back down oh yeah that's
Good, spread the skull,
definitely feel that.
Now what else can you do with the sword?
I mean, obviously you could just add the weight of it
to your calisthenics exercises.
There goes my microphone.
You could do, you know,
just hold it on one side of your body
and then do your squats, your split squats.
You could do all of that.
You can mix it up, so do a split squat,
grab the sword, come down for a swing,
bring it back up, shoulder it.
One cool thing I figured out you can do with this
is one arm pushups, which look totally bad-ass.
My goodness, that's the most bad-ass thing I've ever heard.
Get the sword on your back, just like this,
and then you're gonna set up
for your one arm pushup.
That is pretty good.
I'm actually shocked at how effective this thing is,
making you work, making you burn calories, burn energy,
just to swing this thing around.
The first thing you really notice is your grip.
You really have to have a strong grip
in order to swing this thing around
and not have it fall out of your hands.
Simply bringing it down and then up from here.
I mean, that requires a decent amount of grip.
And then you could do things like curls
right here like this,
tricep extensions.
Now, if you've been looking for something new,
something fresh, a new take on fitness,
something like this can definitely be a new interesting take
and a new interesting way to get in shape,
build some muscle, maintain some muscle,
and have fun while you're doing it.
You feel like you're Cloud Strife,
about to go battle Sephiroth.
I know you all did it as a kid, just like I did.
You feel like guts from Berserk,
swinging around a giant ass, heavy ass sword.
Will it get you, you know, the full body workout
that you're looking for?
Probably not, but you can definitely add it
to your workouts to make them more fun.
