Spinning ladders, flying bicycles, and a high dive into a dumpster.
It's all part of Urban Scuba,
a show mixing dance acrobatics and some unusual props.
Fox 4's Alex Boye, live at the Coppell Arts Center
with the preview. Hey, Alex.
Hey, guys. A pretty exciting event. Good morning to you all.
You know, we are inside of the Coppell Arts Center,
and this is transformed into what they call Anytown USA
for this performance of Urban Scuba's acrobatic aerial dance show.
I want to bring in kind of the creative mind behind this.
Let's say good morning to Brian Sanders,
who is the creative director of Urban Scuba.
Thanks so much for joining with us.
Sure. Good morning, Alex.
Tell me a little bit about what we are seeing behind us right now.
Okay. Behind us is an exploration into a warehouse filled with junk.
And Urban Scuba is a polite form of dumpster diving.
And so we imagine what other people have gotten rid
of as useful.
So, right behind us,
we see a crazy number of doors.
And basically, when you redo a house,
you get rid of the doors and get new doors.
And so, we thought, what can we do with these doors?
And so, we're turning found objects into beautiful dance.
Tell me a little bit about kind
of what goes into getting this on stage.
We saw them practicing beforehand.
You know, it takes a lot of work.
It's very physical as well as well as mental.
Absolutely.
There's a lot of conditioning and weeks and weeks of preparation
and rehearsals and practice and training,
training up to be able to do moves at this caliber.
What do you want the audience who may come see this tonight
or who are thinking about seeing this tonight
to take away from this show? What are they in for?
So I feel like these performers offer us insight into impossibility,
if I can say that.
We see something and we say, God, that looks impossible.
But it gives us a moment to see that impossibility in ourselves
and really believe in something hopeful in the future.
Absolutely. We're seeing some video of that performance in motion.
What are some of the other numbers that people will see here tonight?
Tonight we have water, we have trash cans,
we have, you know, found objects of every kind.
We have some that we've even invented, like bicycle parts we've
cobbled together and hung in the air and danced on in the air.
Yeah, and I think what's interesting for folks here that I observed,
for this venue, it's so intimate that any seat is a good seat.
It seems like anybody who comes out tonight will really get
a front row experience to this really unique show.
Yes, absolutely. And the set is about 30 feet tall,
so they'll really be inside of the experience.
Yeah, very cool.
Anything else you want people to know about this?
Kind of just really the dedication it takes by your, you know,
actors here, your performers to really pull this off,
as well as all the folks behind the scenes, of course.
Sure.
You know, it's about coming together as a group and creating something
and bringing it to a new community like Dallas.
And so we're excited to be here.
Yeah, well, we are excited to have you here.
Thanks so much for giving us a little preview, a sneak peek,
so to speak, about what we can expect tonight.
Again, you see them practicing one
of their very popular numbers for that performance tonight.
I do want to tell you, if you're interested in coming out tonight,
we do have two performances.
One at 8 p.m. this evening and then tomorrow again,
Saturday the 17th at 2 p.m. here at the Coppell Arts Center.
There are still plenty of good seats available.
and guys coming up in our nine o'clock hour we
are going to revisit with Brian and see another
performance that they're going to show us that's going
to give us an illusion of water that coming
up on good day in our nine o'clock hour
for now reporting live here in Coppell I'm Alex Boyer back
to you guys
