Throughout 2026, Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers captured an average of 107 more occupiers per month than Russia captured Ukrainians, according to the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

"As early as 2023, Russian propaganda was spreading fake news about 'more than 20,000 Ukrainian soldiers' in Russian captivity. In January 2024, Putin claimed that the ratio of Russian to Ukrainian prisoners was supposedly 'one to ten,'" the statement added.

However, in reality, since mid-2023, Ukraine has begun capturing more Russian soldiers than Russia has captured Ukrainian ones. In 2024 and 2025, Ukraine's exchange fund grew faster than Russia's. "In 2026, this gap widened further. In the first eight months of the year, 858 more Russian servicemen were captured by Ukrainian forces than by Russian ones. On average, this is an increase of 107 per month," Koordshtab emphasized.

The department noted that Ukraine is achieving this thanks to Ukrainian soldiers who risk their lives to capture the enemy alive. Systematic information campaigns also play an additional role, showing the captors that surrendering is an opportunity to save their lives.

"Ukraine also incentivizes its military personnel to capture the enemy alive – bonuses are provided for this. This creates a whole system: Ukrainian soldiers are further motivated to capture Russians, Russian prisoners of war are held in normal conditions, and information about this reaches the Russian military. Every Russian in Ukrainian captivity is an opportunity to bring home another Ukrainian defender or civilian hostage," the Coordination Headquarters added.

As reported, defenders captured a Russian intelligence officer at the border . The prisoner turned out to be a scout from Russia's 20th Separate Reconnaissance Battalion. His radio was confiscated and he was interrogated.

"The man indicated the location of enemy positions, the routes of other enemy sabotage and reconnaissance groups, and their future plans in the area," the Special Operations Forces said.

It was also reported that Ukrainians fighting on the side of the occupiers were captured near Chasov Yar . However, the fate of these prisoners may differ from that of the Russian servicemen. Specifically, they could face up to 15 years in prison.
