Try it once before deciding it makes no sense | Eckhart Tolle

Self-realisation is a word most people on this path use. Eckhart Tolle points out that the self it refers to is not the one most people assume. He arrives there through a practice. Normally consciousness has content. You are always conscious of something, a thought, a perception, a feeling, a memory, and more than that, you are identified with whatever you are conscious of. You are never conscious of nothing, because the mind decides that makes no sense. So the practice is to attend to something that is not a thing. The space in a room. The silence around you rather than the sounds in it. He recommends the shakuhachi, the Japanese bamboo flute, for exactly this: in the hands of the masters it is a very simple instrument surrounded by long silences, and you can listen to the gaps more easily than to the notes. When you do that, the object of consciousness is withdrawn, and what remains is consciousness conscious of itself. He admits that sounds strange, and says it is simply how it is. In the old Indian traditions that is what self-realisation meant. Not the mind-made self, the one with your name and history. The formless one underneath it. The deep I. If the music part of this speaks to you, Eckhart curated an album for this kind of listening, Music to Quiet the Mind. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session.
