Why you can't choose how you react, and the moment that changes | Eckhart Tolle

He was supposed to meet you at five. He didn't turn up. That is the whole event, and it is neutral. Then comes the story: he let me down, again, he always does this. Then comes the feeling that matches the story. In this talk from Ottawa, Eckhart Tolle shows how the ego turns a fact into a narrative, and what it does to you while it does. The ego, he says, is never content for long. It loves drama, it loves fighting, it loves its enemies, because every bout of anger blows it up like a balloon and makes its sense of self stronger. To the ego, anger feels good. To your body it is toxic. Two centuries ago, a doctor treating a man with an open wound in his stomach noticed that whenever the man got angry, the lining turned bright red. The ego cannot see that what it loves is suffering, because it has no awareness. That is what "unconscious" means in spiritual terms: not asleep, but so completely identified with the egoic self that nobody is home to notice the thoughts, the emotions and the reactions as they happen. In that state you are at the mercy of events, of other people, and most of all of your own thinking. People say "I think", as if thinking were something they do. For an unconscious person, thinking happens to them. They cannot choose their thoughts, and they believe every one. Eckhart calls it the voice in the head. For many people, the first awakening was the moment they noticed a habitual thought and stepped back from it: the realisation that my thoughts are happening to me, and I am not my thoughts. That step back is the birth of a new consciousness. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session. Join Eckhart Tolle Now to watch. 👇
