The Russians lost another Mi-8 helicopter along with three crew members. According to the Telegram channel Fighterbomber , the helicopter was shot down, according to preliminary information, by Russian air defenses.

"Yesterday we lost another Mi-8, along with its crew. I won't reveal the reasons. It's a classic one, one humanity is unlikely to ever overcome, despite AI, robots, neural networks, friend-or-foe, and other wonders of science and technology," writes Fighterbomber.

According to Exilenova+ , the helicopter was removed from the site due to the drone threat. It was then directed in the same direction as the Ukrainian UAVs. As a result, the Russian Su-35 shot down the helicopter, mistaking it for an enemy UAV. In early September, it was reported that Ukrainian drones hit Russian Mi-35 and Mi-8 helicopters at the Taganrog-Tsentralny airfield.

A few days later, the Defense Forces struck a number of high-value enemy targets. Specifically, ships were hit in Novorossiysk, and a Su-33 carrier-based fighter and a Mi-8 helicopter were destroyed in Anapa.

Media reports indicate that Russia plans to produce 72 Mi-8 helicopters in 2026–2027 , double the current production rate. This production rate will allow Russia to compensate for the previous losses of Mi-8s. However, it is unlikely that Russia will be able to produce the required number of helicopters.

Private intelligence company Dallas specialists reviewed the minutes of a meeting held on February 24th, attended by representatives of 40 Russian defense industry enterprises and Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Gennady Abramenkov. According to these minutes, the Kazan Helicopter Plant received the Mi-8 helicopter production plan directly from the Russian government.

Dallas noted that reaching this production rate will enable Russia to compensate for the previously incurred losses of Mi-8 helicopters. However, it is unlikely that Russia will be able to produce the required number of helicopters. According to Dallas, the document describes financing mechanisms and advance payments for component manufacturers, as well as cooperation schemes between Russian state corporations Russian Helicopters, UEC, KRET, and other suppliers.

According to the plan, the Kazan Helicopter Plant will produce 37 Mi-8 helicopters in 2026, and 35 units in 2027. Dallas believes that reaching this production capacity will allow the Russians to return to planning full-scale airborne operations. Dallas also shared that the current production rate of the Mi-8 in Russia is 20 helicopters per year. They are manufactured at the Kazan Helicopter Plant and the Ulan-Ude plant.
