The most important result of the war in Ukraine is not a new tactical drone or precision-guided missile, but the digital information that controls these systems. As columnist Mariam Mumladze writes for the Washington Examiner , while defense planners around the world continue to focus on hardware production, a quiet race continues for control of the algorithmic foundation of modern warfare.

The real reward, she said, is the localized, real-world combat data needed to train the AI.

"European allies are already adapting to these changes. At the end of September 2026, the UK concluded a first-of-its-kind agreement for its defense sector. Up to 12 British defense companies gained access to Avengers Labs, a secure Ukrainian platform for training artificial intelligence models for unmanned systems," the author of the article recalled. The expert emphasized that this partnership opens access to a repository containing more than 5 million annotated images from the front, depicting everything from tanks and air defense systems to infantry and reconnaissance drones.

Thus, by using data collected on the digital battlefield in Ukraine, the UK is accelerating the development of its own defence technologies.

"Adversaries also clearly understand the value of this resource. Anthropic's September 2026 threat intelligence report revealed large-scale cyber operations targeting the Ukrainian military ecosystem. The report emphasized state-sponsored espionage, specifically linking a Russian actor to attacks on 24 institutions, including Ukrainian ministries, defense agencies, and drone supply chain manufacturers," Mumladze explained. Over the course of 130 days, these hackers used artificial intelligence agents to monitor deployed malware and rewrite its code as needed. The goal was to obtain proprietary software and firmware for image recognition AI systems, which ensure their effectiveness in adverse conditions.

"This picture illustrates the transformation of approaches to developing modern defense capabilities. Physical parameters such as aircraft design, range on a single battery charge, and payload capacity remain crucial, but the real force multiplier, as it turns out, is software. An autonomous system is entirely dependent on the quality and volume of data used to train its targeting models," the reviewer analyzes.

Thus, according to the expert, as drone designs become standardized, the decisive advantage will belong to those armed forces that can freely refine and apply combat-tested training data. "Prioritizing data integration alongside hardware development will ensure that future defense architectures remain resilient and advanced in high-threat environments," the publication's author concluded.
