Russian strikes on the Southern Bridge in Kyiv, which connects the capital's right and left banks, indicate a violation of the agreements concerning the Crimean Bridge , as political scientist Vadym Denisenko wrote on Facebook.
"There have been several red lines in the Ukrainian-Russian war recently. And one of them is bridges. We don't strike the Crimean Bridge, and the Russians don't strike bridges across the Dnieper. Today, this agreement has been violated," he wrote. He believes that this strike "changes all the rules of the game."
Denisenko doesn't rule out the possibility that Russia's move was motivated by the fact that, with at least a two-month window of opportunity while Ukraine lacks defense against Shahed missiles, the Russians decided to test whether they could damage the bridge sufficiently to render it inoperable. He argues that targeted strikes at a single point could, in theory, be effective, which is why the Russians launched the "experiment."
"Putin understands that Ukraine will attempt to attack the Crimean Bridge. But, and this is crucial, at this stage of the war, the Crimean Bridge has lost the sacred symbolic significance it held at the beginning of the war," the political scientist emphasized.
According to him, Putin believes that Ukraine is currently "bound" by pressure from US President Donald Trump to refrain from striking oil refineries, and therefore will not dare to respond asymmetrically by increasing the scale of strikes on oil refineries.
"We have no choice: we need to raise the stakes in negotiations with the US and demand influence over Russia," Denisenko emphasized.
He also noted that the day of the attack on the bridge was not chosen by chance and was specifically chosen on Defender's Day. As reported, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported two Russian drone strikes near the supporting structure of the Southern Bridge . Metro and ground public transportation on the bridge have been suspended. Experts are inspecting the bridge's condition following the strikes.
Media reports indicated that a Russian drone struck the Pivdennyi Bridge in Kyiv just as a metro train was crossing the open section of track. Passengers heard a powerful explosion and saw a flash. Immediately afterward, smoke appeared in the train car, and ash poured out of the ventilation system.
