Small drones are becoming standard support for mortar crews in modern armies. As Forbes reports , this is changing the traditional approach to mortar operations.

This month, Washington National Guard troops used small unmanned aerial systems during mortar crew training. According to the publication, the drones performed multiple tasks: detecting targets, pinpointing their precise location, and transmitting this information to the troops. Additionally, the drone operators were able to monitor the munitions in flight and assess the impact of the strike.

"Our goal during the exercise was to successfully integrate unmanned systems into the chain of command from target acquisition to shooter. We exceeded expectations," said Lt. Col. Josh Brown, commander of the 3rd Battalion, 161st Infantry Regiment, Army National Guard. According to Forbes, drones also inspected the impact sites after the shells fell. This allowed the military to assess the damage and determine the accuracy of the target hit.

Forbes notes that the integration of autonomous systems with mortar crews is unprecedented in the US Army. Mortars are among the oldest types of weapons, and their general concept has remained virtually unchanged for generations.

"Images of soldiers firing mortars during both world wars bear a striking resemblance to modern warfare. Mortars were such a respected element of combat that they seemed virtually immune to major changes until now," the publication states. According to the author, the wider use of drones in combination with mortars could improve the accuracy of fire and make it more difficult for the enemy to conceal its positions, making the battlefield even more transparent. As reported, Russia modified the Geran-5 jet drone's layout , moving the engine inside the fuselage to reduce drag and increase its speed to 700 km/h. This decision could make it more difficult for low-cost interceptor drones to intercept the drone, but it also reduces its range due to the reduced fuel tank capacity and creates thermal protection issues.
