In Iran, discontent with the government is growing amid an economic crisis, falling incomes, and ongoing repression. However, fear is currently holding a significant portion of the population back from taking to the streets en masse.
Iran researcher Bani Sabati stated that "tremendous negative energy" against the regime has accumulated in the country. In his opinion, a clear signal of support for protests against the current government is needed to initiate large-scale protests.
The economic situation remains a major source of tension. According to data cited by Sabati, Iran's GDP has contracted by 10 percent, and teachers' salaries have fallen from approximately $200 to $70. Many Iranians are attempting to leave the country, including through the land border with Turkey.
At the same time, the authorities continue to pressure the population. In central and southern Tehran, security forces detain women without hijabs, while in affluent northern neighborhoods, such behavior is tolerated. Sabati stated that such relaxations benefit the regime and are used for propaganda purposes.
Uncertainty among the population is heightened by contradictory statements from US President Donald Trump. He first speaks of the possible collapse of the regime, then moves on to negotiations and hopes for an agreement. Due to the lack of a clear signal, Iranians are uncertain whether they will receive support in the event of mass protests. Amid the crisis, skilled professionals, including engineers and doctors, continue to leave the country. Reza Pahlavi and other Iranian opposition figures abroad are discussing the country's future but have yet to formulate a clear plan to overthrow the current regime. Iran in this case could expand the geography of the current military conflict if the US or Israel strikes the country again, according to Yahya Rahim Safavi, adviser to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
According to him, the confrontation has already spread beyond the usual combat zone. He noted that the conflict has spread from the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz toward the Red Sea, and further escalation could lead to a new direction. Safavi admitted that with new military actions the front could expand to the Indian Ocean and possibly go even further beyond it.
"The front will expand even further, reaching the Indian Ocean and perhaps even beyond," the adviser said.
