Russia attacks with turbojet-powered drones, creating a new challenge for Ukraine's air defenses

Russia has sharply increased its use of turbojet-powered attack drones during attacks on Ukraine, Business Insider reports.
According to Colonel Yuriy Ignat, the chief spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, the Kremlin has already launched 7,700 such drones over Ukraine. The majority of these jet-powered drones were launched over the summer. While Russia used 350 of these drones in June, that number rose to 1,500 in July, and to 2,850 in August.
In September, Russia already launched 1,900 faster and more advanced drones. According to Ignat, this means that at least half of all Russian long-range drone attacks are made up of rocket systems, including Russian versions of the Iranian Shahed.
"This suggests that the enemy is not stopping, that it is finding ways to acquire these jet engines and other components and assemble them on Russian territory," Ignat said. Jet-powered drones pose a particular challenge to Ukrainian air defense due to their high speed. Ukraine continues to search for inexpensive, large-scale countermeasures to counter these targets. Previously, Russia's primary attack drone was the propeller-driven Geran-2, modeled after the Shahed-136. It reached speeds of approximately 185 km/h.
To combat massive attacks, Ukraine began using interceptor drones. However, the advent of faster, jet-powered drones has created a new challenge for this defense system.
The newer Geran-3 jet is considered the Russian equivalent of the Iranian Shahed-238. Its maximum speed can reach 600 km/h, and even 800 km/h in a dive.
Russia also unveiled the Geranium-4, a delta-wing aircraft with a high-speed airframe. The growing number of jet drones indicates Russia's expanding access to necessary components. Ukraine has stated that Russia is sourcing some of its jet engines from China. Electronic components, including digital signal processors, clock generators, and receivers manufactured by American or European companies, were also found in Russian drones.
The Kremlin, as noted in the article, plans to further increase the production of drones.
Last week, Politico reported on plans by a Russian state-owned company to produce enough airframe material for another 28,000 single-wing attack drones annually. This is in addition to the 36,000 the company is already estimated to produce annually.
Satellite images also revealed a new Russian facility designed to launch jet-powered drones. It is equipped with 85-meter-long rails. In response, Ukraine began developing jet-powered interceptor drones. However, their production is still in the early stages. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said this week that Ukraine has already tested four types of jet-powered interceptor drones in combat conditions.
At the same time, according to data cited in the article, Ukrainian air defenses intercept approximately 60% of Russian drones. By comparison, when Russia primarily used propeller-driven Shaheds, this figure was approximately 90%.
