The war in Ukraine has shifted from tank battles and artillery duels to an exchange of strikes from long-range drones that can hit military and industrial targets deep behind the front, according to an article in The Guardian .
According to the authors, both sides are developing this type of weaponry, but the balance of power remains uncertain. For example, just one crew of the Raid unmanned systems regiment can carry out up to two dozen missions each week. Large-scale attacks, such as those targeting the Moscow oil refinery, would require launching up to 300 drones simultaneously.
According to expert Sidharth Kaushal of the Royal United Services Institute, the consequences of such strikes affect the economies of both sides. The authors noted that, in addition to long-range drones, the Russian military's arsenal also includes ballistic and cruise missiles. Since May, Russia has been actively using the jet-powered version of the Iranian Shahed missiles. Moreover, targeting is becoming "increasingly ruthless." According to Kaushal, Russia has several advantages over Ukraine. These include a diverse arsenal of long-range weapons, a more advanced air defense system, and greater societal flexibility, as "its citizens have not faced such intense pressure for so long."
Russia is projected to produce 36,000 Shahed missiles by 2027, up to 10,000 Parcel missiles, and a similar number of low-cost Dan-T cruise missiles. All of these could be used to attack Ukraine's power, heating, and water supply systems this winter.
Ukraine also continues its campaign of strikes, the consequences of which are widely publicized. However, "the overall picture of the consequences is more difficult to understand." Ukrainian military officials told the authors that Russia has likely improved its radio jamming capabilities, making strikes with cheap attack drones less accurate.
"However, despite the escalation of the war as technology advances, neither side is close to defeat or crisis. The real tests await Russia if it attempts to mobilize up to 300,000 people after the parliamentary elections, as well as Ukraine, which will once again try to refinance its finances and, most importantly, survive the winter," the authors conclude.
As a reminder, according to some reports, Russian military personnel are scouting potential targets in Kyiv for future strikes. These could include substations and railway infrastructure, as well as large retail facilities, particularly Auchan and similar hypermarkets.
Moreover, the Russian population could also face the consequences of Ukrainian strikes on infrastructure this winter if Ukraine decides to retaliate symmetrically to Russian attacks. Experts note that Russia's vast territory and limited air defense capabilities create a significant number of potential targets for Ukraine.
However, according to expert Ivan Kirichevsky, information about the impact of far from all targets in Russia is publicly available. He said that approximately 5 percent of the scale of such work is known.
