Ukraine used a range of long-range weapons in a massive overnight drone attack on Moscow and the surrounding region, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, claiming that the strikes hit one of Russia’s key oil-industry enterprises and a logistics facility in the Moscow region.
According to Zelenskyy, the operation involved Ukrainian long-range systems including Flamingo, Palianytsia and Pelican, as well as FP-1, RZ-100, MICH-2000, Vendetta, Liutyi, Bars and Yanvar. He said the operation involved Ukraine’s Security Service, Unmanned Systems Forces, Special Operations Forces, military intelligence and Foreign Intelligence Service. Zelenskyy said the strikes had a “very significant impact” in the Moscow region and that Ukraine had hit facilities that generate revenue supporting Russia’s war effort. “These are billions of dollars that sustain the war machine,” he wrote on X. He also said sanctions had been imposed on an enterprise in Russia’s Voronezh region, without providing further details. Russian authorities reported extensive damage following what Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin called the most massive drone attack on the Russian capital. Sobyanin said more than 1,600 Ukrainian drones had been shot down across Russia since Saturday, including around 450 approaching Moscow. Russia’s Defense Ministry separately said it had intercepted and destroyed 1,110 Ukrainian drones overnight across Russia, annexed Crimea and the Black Sea, describing it as the largest attack of the year, according to state news agency TASS. Russian officials said several drones reached the Moscow Oil Refinery in the Kapotnya district, causing damage and a fire. Ukrainian and Russian reports indicated that the strike may have affected the refinery’s AVT-6 processing unit, although the exact extent of the damage has not been independently established. A large fire was also reported at the Sofyino logistics technopark in the Moscow region following the drone attack, according to Russian-language reports. The attack caused casualties in the wider Moscow region. Governor Andrey Vorobyov said two people were killed and 20 injured, including three children, with 15 people hospitalized. In the Ramensky district, a falling drone caused a fire on the roof of a 21-story apartment building, prompting the evacuation of about 400 people, while 20 vehicles were damaged. A separate strike on a three-story apartment building in Sofyino killed one person and injured five others, according to Vorobyov. The attack came on the final day of Russia’s three-day parliamentary election, alongside regional and local voting. Sobyanin accused Ukraine of attempting to disrupt the elections, saying the effort had failed. Kyiv has presented the strikes instead as part of its campaign to hit Russian oil, logistics and other infrastructure supporting the war. The attack followed Zelenskyy’s announcement on Saturday that he had approved new long-range strikes against Russia. “We are preparing to expand our long-range capabilities,” he said.
