Moscow and Kyiv have escalated their energy standoff to a new level, the consequences of which could impact not only civilians in both countries but also passengers on international flights, Forbes reports.
As the author of the publication notes, Russia has recently switched to continuous attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. These include missile and drone strikes, day and night. Russian troops are also increasingly using jet-powered drones, which are significantly faster than previous models.
Among other things, Russian strikes targeted Ukrainian gas stations. The author attributes this to the Kremlin's desire to attack the daily lives of the Ukrainian population, sow fear, and demoralize them. At the same time, Ukraine is intensifying attacks on Russian oil infrastructure. According to Forbes, the consequences of this campaign have already forced Moscow to almost completely ban the export of petroleum products and begin importing gasoline. Several Russian regions, as well as occupied Crimea, have experienced problems with fuel supplies.
The author cites the September 9 attack as particularly significant. Then, Ukrainian drones crossed approximately 3,000 kilometers of Russian airspace and reached the Yamalo-Nenets region in Western Siberia, a key gas production and processing area in Russia.
The immediate damage to the Novy Urengoy and Purovsky plants is not estimated to be critical. However, the attack itself has much broader significance. "The vast size of Russia's territory no longer provides protection even for its most remote oil and gas production and processing areas," the journalist writes.
The author points out that Ukrainian attacks previously primarily targeted western Russia, where a significant portion of oil refineries, storage facilities, pipelines, and other energy infrastructure are located. Now, Arctic gas facilities are also under threat. These include large-scale liquefied natural gas projects in Yamal, which account for over 60% of Russia's liquefied natural gas exports.
Against this backdrop, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's warning regarding flights over Russia takes on particular significance. In his September 1 address, he stated: "Today we want to warn every airline that uses Russian airspace, every insurer, and everyone who still uses key Russian airports: Russian skies are becoming absolutely dangerous."
The author notes that after the outbreak of full-scale war, Western airlines ceased flying through Russian airspace. However, carriers from Asia, the Middle East, and some other regions continued to use these routes. According to the author, the long-range strike on a target in Siberia demonstrated the reach of Ukrainian drones, and that Russian skies are becoming dangerous not only near the Ukrainian border.
Ultimately, the author sees another possible consequence in the new range of Ukrainian strikes: a threat to the Russian energy grid. Until now, Kyiv has primarily focused on targets linked to Russia's energy export revenues, while Russian troops have systematically attacked Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Now, the journalist suggests, the situation could change.
"Ordinary Russians may soon begin to share the suffering of their Ukrainian colleagues," the author concludes.
