We've got major last-minute Bills updates for you that you need to know ahead of Week 1's matchup
against the Houston Texans. It's a potential AFC Championship preview as one of the best
offenses in the league takes on one of the best defenses in the league as the Bills try to start
the season off right with a win. So welcome in everybody to Bills Digest. I'm Ben Volker and
here at Bills Digest we've got you covered with all things related to the Buffalo Bills and ladies
and gentlemen we have officially made it. Week 1 is here. The Bills play football today and I am
extremely excited. We've got a ton of content for you. If you don't want to miss a thing make sure
to go ahead and hit subscribe because we'll have content coming the entire season. We're only
getting started here today. So as I said I am extremely excited for this matchup but I'm also
a little bit nervous because this is a very, very, very scary Texans defense. But look the Bills made
a ton of offseason changes this year bringing in Joe Brady as head coach adding DJ Moore. So it
will be interesting to see how this new look Bills teams look and we will get right into things but
first I've got to mention that today's video is sponsored by Calshi and on Calshi you're trading
directly against other users not the house like traditional sports books. You're buying yes or no
contracts on the outcome of events across sports politics or even the weather. For example this is
why I bring up Calshi right now because on Calshi they are running a special for this Bills-Texans
game where you can trade on the outcome of touchdowns in this game and as you can see here
here's a few Bills players that and their odds to score a touchdown in this game. You can see
and DJ Moore there at the bottom at 25% and I like DJ Moore in this one. The Bills brought him in
to be that number one threat for Allen. We'll get into DJ Moore a little bit later but
if you like me like this DJ Moore one you can place $25 on Calshi right now and if
DJ Moore does indeed score a touchdown in today's game you could win $91 in return. That's pretty
good. So if you are interested in trying out Calshi use the link in the description trade $25
with code digest NFL and get $25 added to your account instantly. Thank you once again to Calshi
for sponsoring today's video. Now guys let's jump right into my five keys for how the Bills
will need to play in order to beat the Texans today. So first and foremost this is the most
important thing that the Bills need to do. They've got to protect Josh Allen. That is a given. Last
time the Bills played the Texans the Texans won and Josh Allen had one of his worst games of his
career as he was sacked eight times. That is unacceptable. If that happens again today there
will be a major problem and the Bills likely won't win that game. But the Bills O-Lineman
they know that they've got to step up and protect Josh Allen. They are not oblivious to this fact
and Deion Dawkins said as much today as this is what he said on this is what he said on Friday
ahead of the game. He said yeah we got our behinds kicked the last time we played. Sometimes in the
football world that just happens when you get your behind kicked you don't forget it.
Playing against elite rusher and elite teams it's good that there is competition and now
it's round two. And look in the last game Deion Dawkins he was banged up on the outside.
Spencer Brown was banged up on the other side. They were not 100% like they are for this game
and they just got beat up by guys like Daniil Hunter and Will Anderson. They just had their way
and but look this is going to be a different story today because Deion Dawkins, Spencer Brown
they know they got to step up and protect their QB. And that brings me into key number two for
this game against the Texans. That Josh Allen and DJ Moore connection that we talked about a little
bit earlier. They brought in DJ Moore to be that number one option for Josh Allen in the receiver
room. All reports are that the connection between the two are phenomenal throughout
all of preseason and now we finally get a chance to see the real deal. People were saying that they
thought the Bills gave up too much to bring in DJ Moore. Now's the time for the Bills to prove fans
wrong and show why they spent that draft capital to go and get a guy like DJ Moore. And it also
ties into the first point because this is what Deion Dawkins, we're going to refer back to him
again. This is what he had to say about DJ Moore's arrival in the receiver room especially in a game
like the Texans game. He said with a guy like DJ he's going to get the ball out of Josh's hands
with what a wide receiver is having. When a wide receiver is having a hard time getting separation
or getting open it puts more pressure on the o-line. DJ is that guy and yeah the past few
years the Bills have definitely had a issue in their receiver room of getting guys open and
getting that separation but that's what DJ Moore brings to the table and it really frees up the
offensive line to not put as much pressure on them as it has been in previous years and
it just the entire synergy of the offense comes together. But there's one more piece on the
offense that we haven't really even been talking about it all throughout preseason and that's so
surprising to me because the Bills still have James Cook and they've got to let James Cook
cook because he James Cook has not been talked about at all this preseason it feels like we've
been talking about Josh Allen of course we've been talking about DJ Moore we've been talking about
this revamped defense but James Cook was the NFL's leading rusher last year with that 1,600 rushing
yards 12 touchdowns he had a phenomenal season last year and now is the opportunity to build on
that once again in his 2026 campaign and look James Cook was the guy that stepped up multiple
times last year when Josh Allen had a few down games James Cook was the guy that carried the
team in his place and that was no exception in the Houston game when Josh Allen was busy getting
beat up this is what James Cook was doing to this team here let me make this a little bit bigger so
you guys can see that he had 116 yards and he scored a touchdown in that Texans game the rest
of the offense wasn't great but James Cook played phenomenally so you add that kind of production
with James Cook with a fired up o-line that's ready to prove people wrong plus you bring in a
DJ Moore to help make everything flow better and this Bills offense might be cooking against
the number one defense in the NFL and yes I say cooking full pun intended but let's talk about
the Bills defense as well because as I mentioned this Bills defense is revamped under Jim Leonard
he's bringing that 3-4 scheme going going the the prevailing thought is that this team is going to
be a lot more aggressive on offense than it has been throughout the entire Sean McDermott era
Leonard's been talking about how he wants to attack the offense and not let the offense play
into their hands and I think if the Bills are going to win this game they are going to have
to play that Texans style of football and I really think that the entire defensive room is buying into
what Jim Leonard is selling because I saw a great article in The Athletic today and it it was talking
about what Jim Leonard brings to the table and this is from Joe Biscaglia from The Athletic he
said players throughout the locker room are excited to debut the scheme as if they've been keeping it
a secret all summer and that shouldn't be dismissed with a brand new play caller Leonard's approach to
attacking the opponent could be a huge edge for Buffalo against a Texans offense still trying to
reach a new level and look the Texans had the worst offensive line in the entire league this year
so if the Bills can really be aggressive with guys like Deion Walker that I think is poised
to have a standout season guys like they brought in like Bradley Chubb or even guys that have
been there and been the defensive stalwarts like Greg Russo and Ed Oliver if they can really attack
that O-line and get after CJ Stroud and make him scramble and run back there that is a recipe for
but let's talk about the fifth and final key to winning this game that being Joe Brady and
obviously you can say of course it's Joe Brady it's he's the head coach but this is the first
time in almost a decade that the Bills have had a new head coach leading the charge and it will
be interesting to see what Joe Brady's style of leadership looks like we know what Joe Brady can
bring to the table as an offensive play caller we've seen it for the past few years with the
Bills we know what he's capable of on that front but what does Joe Brady the head coach bring to
the table is he going to be that leader of men that the Bills need and the reason I'm a little
bit concerned is because we've seen guys like this in the past that have been hired as head coaches
from great offenses and they just aren't able to bring that same level of offensive-mindedness
to a head coaching role I'm thinking guys like Josh McDaniels he goes from the Patriots and he
can't figure it out figure it out in Las Vegas I'm thinking guy like Mike McDaniel yeah all the
all the McDaniels I guess in Miami these are guys that are great offensive minds but they just can't
lead a football team is Joe Brady going to be able to be a leader like a guy is he going to be
more like a guy like Sean McVay or Kyle Shanahan that there are great offensive minds but still
are able to lead a football team time will tell but Joe Brady's mindset ahead of this game is
very very simple he said all I care about is us doing whatever the heck we have to do to go one
and oh it doesn't have to look good it doesn't have to be pretty Joe Brady just wants to get
the win and that gives me confidence that Joe Brady isn't going to try to play this perfect
style of football where everything needs to be drawn up a hundred percent correctly and if one
thing goes wrong everything is going to be thrown out the window no I it gives me confidence that
Joe Brady is the right guy for the job but those are my five keys to winning against the Texans
let me know what you guys think about these wrong hand about these and also let me know
what you guys think the final score of this game will be I've been saying it all week I think this
is going to be a close one I think it's going to be low scoring I'm going I'm taking the bills
obviously 20 to 17 it's going to be a really close one the bills are going to have to play
a different style of football than they are used to but I think they are capable of it under that
Joe Leonard defense but once again let me know what you guys think leave your score predictions
below and we will have to see how things shake up it's only a matter of time now before kickoff so
as always if you enjoyed hit the like button let me know and thanks for watching and especially
today go bills
