Iran’s military released video early Wednesday showing what is said were missiles and drones being launched toward U.S. vessels and oil tankers, in response to the latest U.S. attack on five Iranian oil tankers. According to Associated Press following the American strikes, Iran state media also said it launched missiles toward U.S. targets in Jordan. Jordan’s military said its air defense systems intercepted 18 ballistic missiles launched toward its territory and two others fell in places where no one lives. It said it has no reports of casualties. Jordan is a staunch U.S. ally that hosts American forces, making the kingdom’s military bases a target of repeat Iranian strikes. U.S. Central Command said it had no information to offer. The U.S. military has destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers following attacks on a U.S. warship by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, U.S. Central Command said in a social media post on Tuesday. The U.S. strikes were in response to two Iranian efforts to hit the warship with ballistic missiles over the past two days, the statement added. It marks the latest tit-for-tat strikes as Washington and Tehran lurch back toward fighting during more than six months of war. Both the U.S. and Iran are seeking to exert control over the Strait of Hormuz, where about one-fifth of the world’s oil passed before the war began.
