Ingredients 1 can salmon (14.75 oz canned salmon) Half cup plain breadcrumbs 2 tablespoons fresh dill 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 whole lemon (zested) 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1 large egg 1 clove garlic (or garlic powder, measure with your heart) Half teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes Salt to taste Black pepper to taste Cooking spray oil for the pan Burger buns Fresh lettuce Pickles (optional for topping) Tartar sauce or dill mayo (optional for topping) Cheese (optional for topping)
Tips and Tricks 🐟 Squeeze as much liquid as you can out of the canned salmon before mixing so your patties do not get too soggy. 🦴 Do not worry about the soft bones inside canned salmon because they are totally edible and soft, but you can pick them out if you want to. 🥣 If your mixture feels too dry to form into patties, splash in a tiny bit of water at a time until it holds together nicely. 🍞 If your salmon mixture feels too wet and sticky, just sprinkle in a few extra breadcrumbs to absorb the moisture. ✋ Use your hands to really fold and press the mixture together because it binds together so much easier that way. ⏰ Cook for 4 full minutes on the first side without touching or flipping so that nice golden crust can set up without breaking. 🍳 Spray the tops of the patties with cooking oil before flipping them over to keep them from sticking. 🥗 Skip the bun and serve these salmon cakes over a bed of fresh lettuce or garden salad for a great lunch option. 🧀 Throw a slice of cheese on top like Jamie does if you love a good classic cheeseburger style fish sandwich. 🥫 Try substituting canned tuna in place of the canned salmon if you want an easy homemade tuna patty instead. 🧊 You can wrap leftover patties in freezer paper and freeze them for easy meal prep dinners later in the month.
Kitchen Helpers 🐾 Eleanor made sure to stay right on kitchen watch duty to see what kind of fish mom was playing with today. 🐾 Kira was hanging out just outside the kitchen doorway making sure she did not miss any delicious food smells coming from the counter. 🐾 Both girls got to taste test a tiny little bite of salmon in their bowls because fish smells are impossible to ignore. 🐾 We definitely miss our best kitchen helper ever Memphis, but the girls still did an amazing job supervising all of the cooking.
Look, ingredients, including dill, because I still have a whole bunch of dill, and look,
second best kitchen helper ever is in here, she's like, mom, are you playing with fish?
I am.
I'm playing with canned salmon.
Welcome back to Snow Dogs Cooking, where if I can cook it, so can you.
This is something I can't even remember the last time I made, but I had the dill, I have
fresh corn going in the oven, which is why my oven's on, and I thought we would make
some salmon patty burgers today.
They're actually pretty easy to make, and a lot of the times, you can get the canned
salmon on sale, so they can actually be a pretty affordable way to eat a pretty good
fish sandwich.
So I'm gonna show you guys just how easy they are to make.
And of course, you're in here.
You could come in the kitchen with me, but no, but you're still in here, so that's pretty
good.
What's the first thing we need to do?
Well, first we need to tell you guys what you're gonna need for this recipe.
You're gonna need a can of salmon.
Now, you're gonna notice most of these have the bones in them.
That's okay.
They're super soft.
You can eat them.
You can spend more money and get fancier salmon, but I'm just gonna use this, and it's just
a standard, what, 14.75 ounce can, so like a 14 ounce can of salmon.
You're gonna need a half a cup of breadcrumbs.
I'm just using the plain ones.
You're gonna need two tablespoons of fresh dill.
You can also go to Google and substitute what you would need if you wanted to use regular
dill.
You will need a tablespoon of Dijon mustard.
You're gonna need a lemon.
You're gonna wanna zest this lemon because you will need all of the zest from one lemon
and then two tablespoons of lemon juice.
We're gonna need a teaspoon of the Worcestershire sauce.
We're gonna need one egg.
You're gonna need some garlic.
Now, you can, of course, mince one clove of garlic or just use a little bit of garlic.
You're gonna need about a half a teaspoon of crushed red pepper.
You can leave this out if you don't want any spice at all.
Salt and pepper.
Did I get it all?
Then, of course, you're gonna need buns and you're gonna need lettuce, but other than
that, I think I got it all.
Oh, you're also gonna need a little bit of oil for your pan for when we throw these into
the pan to cook them up.
First thing we're gonna do, we are going to drain this and squeeze as much of the liquid
out of it as possible.
You want this to be as dry as possible.
Now, if you make it and it is a little bit too wet, we're just gonna add more breadcrumbs,
but that is what we're gonna go ahead and do right now.
It should look like this.
I went through and like kind of broke it apart as I put it into the bowl.
So that is how it should look and it's nice and dry.
Now, let's see what the dogs think.
Yeah, your nose was going pretty good.
I put a little bite in a bowl for you, because you ain't eating that off the ground.
Oh, look at that!
Second best kitchen helper ever is like, oh, can I try some as well?
Yeah, hold on a second.
I didn't get two bowls ready.
I didn't think you'd run in here, but you did.
You're not stealing this.
This one's for Kira.
A little nibble for Kira.
Ready, Kira?
There you go.
Yeah.
What do you think?
Yeah, that's what you're smelling in here.
You're smelling salmon.
Good stuff?
Yeah, good stuff.
Next thing you want to do, take your lemon and turn it into zest, the whole entire lemon
and juice.
Two tablespoons of fresh lemon juice.
We're gonna take this egg, crack it, put it in here.
Take your half a cup of breadcrumbs into the bowl.
Uh oh, maybe I should have got a bigger bowl.
We'll make it work.
Don't drop your dill into the bowl like I did, but at least I didn't get any egg on it.
Put your dill in the bowl.
Lemon zest in the bowl.
Lemon juice in the bowl.
A teaspoon of the Worcestershire sauce.
You know, that stuff.
Into the bowl.
Some garlic into the bowl.
Come on out of there.
Why aren't you coming out?
There you go.
Measure with your heart.
One tablespoon of Dijon mustard into the bowl.
Half a teaspoon of the red pepper flakes into the bowl.
You knew I was gonna say it.
And then pepper, pepper, pepper.
How much?
You know, some.
If you like a lot, then a lot.
And salt.
And I'm only adding a little bit of salt because, again, I don't like to add a lot of extra
salt to stuff.
Now we're gonna mix this together with a fork.
I did have to switch to a bigger bowl.
And now we're gonna take our spatula and we're gonna kinda start mixing, folding and
pushing it together.
It is gonna be flaky.
If you feel like you can't form it into a patty, add just a little bit of water at a
time and that will help.
Okay, so I got out a piece of parchment paper and I separated this into four balls.
Once you start mixing this with your hands, it's gonna come together a lot better.
So mix it really good and then mix it with your hands.
Now I'm gonna form these into patties.
So I'm basically gonna put them between my hands and just flatten them until they're
patty shaped.
And you will get four out of this recipe.
Ta-da!
And how thick?
You know, like a burger.
Now I'm gonna take some non-stick spray on my pan, which I have over a medium-high heat.
I let it get warm.
I'm gonna spray this oil on here and I'm gonna put these on here, cook them on each side
for about four minutes.
It's already cooked.
We're basically trying to get like a little golden crust on it.
So clearly I have not flipped these yet.
Pro tip when making these, four minutes, don't touch them.
Don't flip them until that four minutes is done because they will start to dry out and
get a little crumbly.
Now, when I go to flip these, I'm gonna take my spray oil and spray the top of them and
then flip them instead of trying to spray the bottom of the pan and do all that fun stuff.
They fell apart a little bit when I flipped them, but they held together for the most part.
Regardless, they'll go from here in a bun and they'll be great.
See how nice and crispy they are on the bottom?
That's what you're looking for.
Okay, I feel like this turned out pretty good.
Now, we're gonna top it with pickles and lettuce and some dill mayo or tartar sauce, whatever
you choose.
Ooh, I think we did it.
It looks good.
It smells good.
Time to give it a try.
I didn't get your first bite reaction, but since you're still chewing, what do you think?
There's lemon and salmon and dill and a little bit of, well, yeah, I guess I didn't have
to say that.
A little bit of crushed red pepper and then farm fresh corn, which I didn't show you guys,
but we made that as well.
Yeah, what do you think?
Is it better than the ridiculously expensive salmon burgers that I buy at Gordon Food?
Okay, then we will be doing this from now on.
It might be a little crazy on the lemon zest, but I kind of like it.
I was gonna say, I could add half the amount next time.
No.
No?
I wouldn't.
Okay.
You'll have to try it.
Yeah, I haven't even tried mine yet.
Jamie did put cheese on his because you like cheese on yours.
So I normally don't, but there's your options.
All right.
Looks amazing.
So that was actually way easier than I thought it was going to be and it was delicious.
Another nice thing that you can do with salmon patties is like you could eat it on a bed
of lettuce.
So have it like a salad or do it on like a burger like we did.
Jamie really liked that.
I'm definitely going to make more of those.
I'm assuming that they would freeze decently.
Well, if you put them in freezer paper, like stacked them and put them in your freezer,
maybe vacuum seal them, but I don't know.
But for now, I put the other two in the fridge.
We're going to have them for lunch tomorrow.
So that was easy.
Hope you guys enjoyed this video.
Some of you are probably going to ask if you can do this with tuna as well.
I've never tried, but I would imagine that you could.
So if you tried it, let me know.
All right, you guys, we hope you enjoyed today's video.
As always, thanks so much for watching.
Thanks for subscribing.
Stay positive.
Dream big.
We will see you again soon.
Now I've got to clean my kitchen.
Or Jamie does.
Somebody does.
The dogs aren't going to do it.
That's for sure.
Goodbye Pawdience!
