In the suburb of Engels in the Saratov region, from where Russian aircraft take off to attack Ukraine, an unknown assailant shot and killed General Nikolai Varpakhovich of the Russian Aerospace Forces, according to Russian media reports.
According to the pro-Kremlin Telegram channel "Baza," an unknown man rode a motorcycle to a military man's private home in the village of Probuzhdenie on the outskirts of Engels this morning.
"The stranger's face was hidden by a motorcycle helmet. Upon seeing the officer, the gunman opened fire. The soldier was wounded twice. His driver was also struck by a bullet," the statement said. According to Baza, the general was hospitalized in serious condition.
The Russian insider channel "Spy Dossier" claims that Major General Nikolai Nikolaevich Varpakhovich, commander of the 22nd Heavy Bomber Aviation Division of the Russian Aerospace Forces' Long-Range Aviation, was assassinated. According to the channel, two bullets hit him in the head and abdomen, and Varpakhovich is currently in critical condition. The shooter is being sought.
It should be noted that on August 31, 2026, the SBU and the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine issued a notice of suspicion to Varpakhovich in absentia in connection with the missile attack on the Okhmatdet Children's Hospital in Kyiv in July 2024. According to the investigation, it was Varpakhovich's long-range aviation units that launched an Kh-101 air-to-ground cruise missile from a Tu-95MS bomber-missile carrier at the hospital.
As reported, in early August, an explosion occurred at an upscale restaurant in Moscow. It was likely an assassination attempt on the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces, Alexander Chaiko, who was implicated in the Bucha massacre. The general apparently survived, but media reports indicate that his family members may have been killed or injured. Varpakhovich is the latest of high-profile military officials targeted in apparent assassinations in Russia over the past few years. Moscow has pointed finger at Ukraine over these killings, but Kyiv has never officially acknowledged playing a role in any of them. Igor Kirillov, a general in charge of the Russian military’s nuclear and chemical weapons protection forces, was killed in December 2024 when an explosive device planted on a scooter was detonated near him.
Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik, deputy head of the main operational department of the General Staff and Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, who ran the armed forces operational training department, were both killed in car explosions in Moscow last year.
Others who have been killed include the founder of a pro-Russian militia group, Armen Sarkisyan, described by Ukraine as a “criminal mastermind,” who died following a bombing in central Moscow, in February 2025.
