Ukrainian defense forces are conducting a coordinated campaign to suppress and destroy the air defenses of the aggressor country, Russia, according to analysts from the US-based Institute for the Study of War. The Ukrainian operation to destroy enemy air defenses in Russia's border regions likely began as part of a broader campaign against Russian economic and military assets.
According to SBS Commander Robert Brovdi , Ukraine struck a fighter jet , a helicopter, air surveillance radars, and several Russian air defense elements, recently. The Ozon logistics center also came under attack.
"ISW has noted signs that Ukrainian forces have intensified their strike campaign against Ozon warehouses since August 22. Ukrainian forces have been conducting significant strikes against Wildberries logistics centers across Russia since approximately July 17, and now appear to be expanding their strike campaign to Ozon warehouses as part of Ukraine's systematic strike campaign against Russian trading platforms," the analysts added.
Ukraine’s air defenses have destroyed more than 445,000 Russian aerial targets since the start of the full-scale invasion on Feb. 24, 2022, Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara said.
The destroyed targets include Kinzhal and Kalibr missiles, Kh-101 cruise missiles, Iskander-M ballistic missiles, tens of thousands of Shahed drones, reconnaissance UAVs, Lancet loitering munitions and other Russian drones, Khmara said.
Ukrainian Air Force aviation has also conducted more than 38,000 sorties during the full-scale war and destroyed over 12,000 Russian aerial threats, including aircraft, helicopters, missiles and drones, he added. “These are not merely figures,” Khmara said. “They represent cities protected, lives saved and threats destroyed.”
Russia sought to seize control of Ukraine’s skies from the first days of the full-scale invasion so it could strike Ukrainians, but those plans failed because “the Air Force shielded the sky with itself,” Khmara said.
