For the first time in aviation history, a Chinese J-16 fighter jet engaged a French Dassault Rafale in aerial combat . The event occurred on August 23, 2026, over Egypt as part of the Eagles of Civilization joint exercise, according to 19FortyFive.
As it turns out, Chinese J-16s and Egyptian Rafales took to the skies one after the other and practiced maneuvers against each other in conditions as close to combat as possible. Before the flights, pilots from both countries received briefings on flight safety and airspace management.
It is noted that this is the second joint exercise between China and Egypt, following their debut last year. According to military observers, the current stage was also unique because it marks the first time J-16 fighters have appeared on the African continent, as they had previously only been spotted in Russia, Thailand, and Pakistan. In addition to the fighter jets themselves, Beijing has deployed a significant technical support force to Egypt: Y-9LG electronic warfare aircraft, KJ-500 airborne early warning aircraft, Y-20 military transport aircraft, YY-20A tanker aircraft, and Z-20 helicopters. According to available information, the multi-day training sessions cover several Egyptian airbases and harmoniously combine theoretical training with practical flight exercises.
Footage from the cockpit of one of the J-16s, filmed during a mock engagement, showed the Egyptian Rafale at close range. And separate video clips that surfaced online captured the French fighter making a quick pass alongside the Chinese aircraft, preparing for a close-range maneuver. Chinese state media published this footage under the telling title: Shenyang J-16 vs. Dassault Rafale. The Egyptian side was significantly more reserved – a representative of the country's armed forces only confirmed the participation of Rafale and MiG-29M2, without going into details.
It is noteworthy that the same exercises also included Soviet MiG-29s, which are still in service with Egypt, so three different generations of fighters could be seen in the sky at the same time.
Wang Yanan, editor-in-chief of the Beijing-based publication Aerospace Knowledge, stated that although the J-16 and Rafale belong to the same generation of fighters, the Chinese aircraft possesses greater capabilities thanks to the ongoing modernization of the Chinese aviation industry. He noted that, besides France, India and Egypt are the main Rafale operators, making Egypt a particularly promising testing ground for Chinese technology.
Interest in a confrontation with the French fighter jet grew last year, when, during the India-Pakistan conflict, Pakistani J-10Cs, according to Islamabad, shot down several Indian aircraft, including a Rafale. India denied this, and independent analysts continue to question both sides' claims of victory.
The J-16 itself is a two-seat, twin-engine, 4.5-generation fighter jet manufactured by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, designed for long-range missions. It is larger and heavier than the J-10 and is equipped with modern avionics, a powerful radar, and electronic warfare systems.
