The number of combat-ready Russian Tu-95 strategic bombers could be reduced to 37 following a new SBU attack on an airfield in Engels, Saratov Oblast. Defense Express recalls that, according to Ukrainian military intelligence data provided to Unian in response to a request on August 25, the aggressor country had 47 Tu-95 aircraft remaining at that time. However, not all of them were operational. According to the Main Intelligence Directorate, only 38 Tu-95s were combat-ready and could be used in military operations. Following an SBU strike on a target in the Saratov region on August 28, one Russian Tu-95 lost a wing. For such a heavy strategic bomber, such damage virtually eliminates the possibility of a quick return to service. "Considering the age of these aircraft and the limited ability to repair them, this means that the plane was not just hit, but destroyed," the publication writes. The new loss is the second for Russia's Tu-95 fleet in about the last month and a half. On July 16, SBU drones attacked a Russian aircraft of this type, resulting in the loss of the tail section of one of the bombers. Rtecall, on the night of August 28, the Ukrainian Defense Forces attacked the Engels-2 military airfield in the Saratov region, which houses Tu-95MS and Tu-160 bombers that regularly launch missile strikes on Ukrainian territory. Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy clarified that the strike on this occupier facility was carried out by SBU Alpha fighters. Separately, an OSINT analyst known as Absolutely Reliable Source posted a satellite image of the airfield. According to their assessment, the Tu-95MS struck on 28 August has a badly damaged right wing. The image also shows a Tu-95MS damaged during a previous strike. The Tu-95MS is a Soviet-era strategic missile-carrying bomber currently in service with Russia. According to Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, Russian forces use this type of aircraft to strike Ukraine with Kh-101, Kh-555 and Kh-55 cruise missiles.
