The mobilization of 300,000 troops being prepared in Russia could end the war, but not in the way Russian dictator Vladimir Putin envisions. British Army Colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon wrote this in a column for The Telegraph.
He writes that the new wave of mobilization could repeat the history of the Soviet Union's Afghan War, when thousands of dead conscripts—the "boys in zinc"—were brought home. Back then, the mothers of Russian soldiers marched to the Kremlin, demanding their return. "The zinc coffins returning from Afghanistan, and the grief and anger they evoked, became a significant factor not only in the end of the war but also in the collapse of the Soviet Union," the author writes.
The author added that Russia's current war against Ukraine has already claimed many more victims. Yet, it hasn't sparked much protest in Russia. He believes this is because, until now, "Putin has managed to avoid sending conscripts of Russian descent to the front against their will": "The Russian army was replenished with prisoners, mercenaries, representatives of ethnic minorities, and men from poor regions, attracted by salaries, extremely high by Russian standards, or the promise of release from prison."
Such people, he noted, have become "expendable material" for residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg.
He also writes that the occupying Russian army is poorly equipped, soldiers suffer from cold and hunger, and are subjected to cruel punishments to force them to go to the battlefield.
"It's a meat grinder that devours young people at industrial speed," is how he described Putin's army. If hundreds of thousands of men from more affluent families were mobilized into such an army, it could radically change the political situation in Russia. Perhaps, for the first time, the so-called Russian "middle class" would feel the effects of war.
"Suddenly, it won't be the son of some Chechen or Tatar mother, a criminal released from prison, or a foreign mercenary who's sent to their death in Donbas. It could be their own sons," he added.
This, the author believes, is the real danger for Putin. And therefore, the Russian dictator faces a "difficult choice": continue the war or admit failure.
"Putin seems to believe that if he can simply outlast Ukraine and its allies, victory will somehow come naturally, out of exhaustion," the expert added, stressing that European allies must still provide Ukraine with weapons to continue to confront Russia.
As a reminder, according to Ukrainian estimates, Russia is preparing another wave of mobilization . Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that it will begin in the fall, after the simulated parliamentary elections. In total, several hundred thousand people are planned to be conscripted, not counting those who will continue to be recruited on a contract basis. Meanwhile, the occupying army's losses remain significant – approximately 30,000 people per month. Evidence is also emerging that Russia has begun testing its technical readiness for mobilization . According to Western intelligence agencies, exercises were held in Kaliningrad to practice practical aspects of the upcoming conscription, including how to accommodate mobilized personnel, provide them with food, and arm them. Similar exercises are also being conducted in other regions of Russia.
