Russia is losing Dagestan: local residents are turning towards Turkey

Russian propagandists are sounding the alarm, claiming that Moscow is rapidly losing influence in Dagestan . The region, recently engulfed in the Russian-Chechen war, has always been a particular focus for Moscow amid the Islamization of the North Caucasus. On air on one of Z-blogger's programs, Alexey Chadayev stated that Turkish content is growing in popularity in Dagestan, while the Russian media environment, on the contrary, is losing audiences. There are several key reasons for this:
1. Ideological vacuum and falsehood: Russian state television and major media holdings are oversaturated with harsh military-political propaganda about the war with Ukraine, aggressive rhetoric, and talk shows. For the local population, especially young people in Dagestan, this content is alien; it creates fatigue and a feeling of artificiality. The internal agenda of federal channels does not respond to the real needs and problems of the region. 2. Turkey's Muslim affinity: Turkish media offers an ideal alternative. Turkey is perceived in Dagestan as a modern, yet traditional and Muslim state. Turkish content, which is increasingly popular, includes historical series such as "Ertugrul" and "Establishment: Osman" that promote traditional values, respect for elders, religiosity, courage, and justice. Blogs and religious educational media are also popular, conveying Islamic values that are close to Dagestanis in a modern, attractive package. 3. Alternative image of "soft power": Turkey successfully promotes its "soft power" through cinema and social media. For young people in the Caucasus, Turkish heroes and lifestyle are culturally relatable, yet also stylish and progressive, unlike the archaic or, conversely, overly liberal images sometimes conveyed by Russian popular culture. 4. Failure of local information policy: Moscow long took the Caucasus's loyalty for granted, controlling the region through local elites and security forces, but completely ignored its mental and cultural integration. As a result, the information space was left unoccupied, and it was naturally filled by higher-quality, regionally relevant Turkish content.

İn this case as if Russian President Vladimir Putin doesn’t have enough problems. The war with Ukraine is going badly, the consumer economy is in recession, and Ukrainian drones are targeting Russia’s capacity to export oil and benefit from the price rise caused by the US-Israeli war with Iran. And now after Dagestan ever-troublesome Chechnya may be on the verge of causing even more trouble for Putin.

The strongman system built under Ramzan Kadyrov is showing visible signs of strain. Questions over Kadyrov’s health have intensified. His sons have been elevated into prominent posts. And the regime has been carefully managing the public image of succession, including the reappearance of Adam Kadyrov after much speculation following reports of a car accident in January. None of this means Chechnya is on the verge of revolt. But it does suggest that one of the Russian Federation’s most volatile regions is entering a more fragile phase just as Putin has less money, less political bandwidth, and fewer security reserves to manage unrest if it breaks out.
