Russia can no longer cope and is trying to save the front: Putin needs the North Koreans

Russia is burning up its "infinite" human resources in the meat grinder of war so quickly that Putin cannot replace losses on the front lines without assistance from other countries. And so, for the second time, the Kremlin has wheedled a new contingent of troops from North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. According to the Main Intelligence Directorate, North Korea has already deployed 8,500 soldiers to Russia, 400 of whom are drone operators. However, the situation won't end there: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Russia plans to deploy 30,000-50,000 North Koreans to the war.

Military expert and retired Ukrainian Armed Forces Colonel Oleg Zhdanov spoke to Glavred about the problems the new batch of North Korean soldiers in the Russian army will create for Ukraine, the gaps Putin will plug with North Koreans, why Russia needs North Korean troops if mobilization is imminent, whether a Russian invasion from the north, via Chernobyl, will occur, and why a Russian operation against NATO is already inevitable. “North Korean soldiers could indeed pose an additional problem for us. We experienced this a couple of years ago, when Kim Jong-un sent 10,000 of his troops to Russia. They participated in combat operations then, but only on Russian territory—in the Kursk region; they did not cross the Ukrainian border.

It's difficult to say how Russia will use North Korean soldiers this time and whether it will send them to the front in Ukraine. However, it will certainly create a number of problems for us. First , even if the North Koreans don't cross our border, they will cover the Russian border in the Kursk, Bryansk, and Belgorod regions, preventing us from entering Russian territory, as happened in the Kursk and Belgorod regions. This will free up some Russian troops to send them to the front in Ukraine.

Incidentally, last time Moscow deployed North Korean specialists to cover the border with the Chernihiv region, thus freeing up its troops to redeploy them to two flanks – the Sumy and Kharkiv regions – to participate in the fighting.

Secondly , the 30,000-strong group is a fairly large group; in fact, it is part of the North Group of Forces, which is currently conducting active combat operations in the Sumy, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv regions.

Third , a select group of North Korean specialists will actively participate in combat operations, but from Russian territory. This includes artillery: the North Korean Koksan self-propelled gun, multiple launch rocket systems, and missile crews. According to our intelligence, North Korea is transferring one division of ballistic missile launchers to Russia. It's unlikely they'll end up in Ukraine. Unless Russia runs into serious trouble and Kim Jong-un allows his soldiers to be used directly on the front lines. After all, if North Korean troops enter our territory, it will escalate the conflict and turn it from a local one into a regional one. And that would fundamentally change the picture. And then the question might arise of why not send a volunteer corps from the European Union or NATO member states. And that's what Putin is most afraid of: it's one thing to have 16,000 volunteers from 72 countries fighting here, and quite another to have the French Foreign Legion arrive”, expert added.
